Bishop’s Gaiters welcomes Beauce-Appalaches Condors’ FB

Bishop’s brings in one of their first 2017 commits.

There is something about a small, intimate campus that can draw a person in. Just ask the Bishop Gaiters’ newest fullback, Mathieu Gagné from Cégep Beauce-Appalaches.

“I like the fact Bishop’s is a small school compared to others universities. It is also located in great city for student life,” Gagné said. Bishop’s University is in Sherbrooke, Québec, which is a two-hour drive from Gagné’s hometown of Saint-Georges de Beauce.

“Bishop’s gave me the opportunity to pursue my studies in English. At the football level, the Gaiters like to use formations with fullbacks and tight ends,” he added.

Bishop’s is currently searching for a new head coach. However, Gagné has had the pleasure of meeting the Gaiters’ other coaches. “Brent Bailey, the offensive coordinator, coached me at the Gaiters’ football school back in 2013 and I really liked working with him,” he said.

“Defensive coordinator Marc Loranger is also a great person and he did a very good job when he introduced me to Bishop’s University,” Gagné added.

In his career, Gagné has spent three seasons on the Cégep Beauce-Appalaches Condors (RSEQ Division 2) and five years in high school ball with the Saint-François’ Faucons (RSEQ). “I played a variety of positions throughout my career. One could say that I am a versatile player,” the 5’9, 240lbs fullback said.

He started his football career on the defensive line. By second year he found himself on the offensive line due to weight limits imposed by the league. In his third until his last year of high school, he played as a fullback and a running back. He occasionally helped the defensive line as a lineman and linebacker. The Condors, however, felt he was better suited as a fullback and recruited him as one.

In his first and second year with the Condors, Gagné fulfilled his role as fullback and played on the special teams. During his second year, he found himself on the offensive line from time to time because the team suffered from injuries.

Last year, Gagné was moved to the offensive line permanently where started all of his team’s games from the first time in his career. He played as a right guard, but he had the chance to play every single position on the offensive line except left tackle. Gagné said that his great teammate and fellow fullback, Andy Genois, who just committed to Laval, filled that spot.

While he is still unsure as to his major, Gagné said he is interested in the school’s history program. He is also contemplating pursing a double major in Social Studies and Secondary Education.
