One Manitoba Bisons football player was selected in the 2010 Canadian Football League (CFL) Canadian Draft on May 2. Third year defensive tackle Eddie Steele has been chosen. There has been at least one Bison selected for the last six consecutive years (2005-10).

In the CFL Canadian Draft, the Manitoba Bisons have now accounted for the most university football players drafted during the last 11 years (2000-10) with 27, three more than second place Laval and four more than third place Saint Mary’s. The Bisons have had players selected in ten of the last 11 CFL Drafts: 2000 (2), 2001 (2), 2002 (7), 2003 (3), 2005 (3), 2006 (1), 2007 (2), 2008 (5), 2009 (1) and 2010 (1).

The Hamilton Tiger-Cats selected Eddie Steele in the 3rd round (22nd overall). This is the second highest Bison selection of an defensive lineman in the CFL Canadian Draft over the last seven years.

Steele, 21, was named as 2009 CIS Football Second Team All-Canadian and 2009 Canada West All-Star. The 6’2”, 280 lbs. defensive tackle completed his third year with Manitoba during the 2009 season and was named to his first CIS selection despite starting only six games due to injury in 2009. The third year Winnipeg native battled double-teams all 2009 season and still registered 27 total tackles (22 were solo) with one forced fumble and one fumble recovery. Steele started and played all eight conference games in 2008 and registered 22.5 tackles and two sacks plus played in 2009 East West Bowl on the victorious West roster (16-7 win) in May 2009. In his rookie campaign with Manitoba, the Arts student-athlete was part of the 2007 Vanier Cup Championship team and registered 5.5 tackles and one sack in the 2007 playoffs (1.5 tackles in the 2007 Vanier Cup CIS Championship).

Bison Football head coach Brian Dobie exclaimed, β€œEddie has done all the right things in the classroom, locker room and obviously on the football field to turn himself into an outstanding student-athlete and CFL prospect. He is an excellent athlete and has applied his tremendous work ethic to propel himself into a opportunity at the CFL level. We are very proud of his selection in the CFL Canadian Draft by Hamilton.”

Steele follows in his father’s footsteps as LB Leroy Steele was also drafted 62nd overall (7th round) by the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in the 1984 CFL Canadian Draft.
