Kyle experienced his first taste of football with the St. Francis Cougars, a bantam team in his hometown of Lethbridge. He was a SAMFA All-Star and MVP of the All-Star game in 2011.

In 2012, Kyle played for the Zone 1 team in the Alberta Summer Games, and kicked the game-winning field goal in the third game against the Black and Gold. The score went back and forth all game, until finally Kyle and the Zone 1 team were trailing by two points with just over a minute left. Kyle recovered his own onside kick, a tough play to pull off in the best of circumstances. They drove it 25 yards, and Kyle put the winning field goal between the uprights, bringing the final score to 22-21.

However, Kyleā€™s elation at having pulled off two tricky plays was short-lived, and would prove to be bittersweet: he broke his wrist in the end zone on the following play, and though Zone 1 was victorious, they missed out on the bronze medal game because another team earned more points in the round robin tournament.

The following autumn, Kyle started high school and suited up for the Catholic Central Cougars of the Alberta Schools Athletic Association (ASAA), Ā  He says the first game of his rookie season is particularly memorable, as it also brought his first high school touchdown, and a shot at redemption after a disappointing Summer Games.

ā€œMy teammate had a nice hit on a player and he fumbled it,ā€ Kyle recalls. ā€œI proceeded to pick it up and returned it 87 yards for a touchdown.ā€

Kyleā€™s touchdown wasĀ one of many the Cougars scored that game, a blowout that ended, to the best of his recollection, in a score of 66-7.

Kyle has enjoyed the bonds he has forged with his fellow Cougars over the years. He says they are like his family, and they spend lots of time together both on the field and off.

Kyle has experience at a handful of different positions in all three phases of the game. While his primary position is receiver, Kyle is expecting to be a constant presence on the field during his grade 12 season ā€” literally. Heā€™ll be taking reps at offence, defence and special teams, and is expecting to stay on the field the entirety of the game.

As he looks ahead to his upcoming senior year, Kyle has yet to decide where the next chapter of his life will take him. He has no concrete plans for university or post-secondary football yet.

ā€œThereā€™s lots on my plate at the moment,ā€ he says.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
