2013 is shaping up to be a busy year for football in Atlantic Canada. From the CFL to the MWFL to the Football Canada Cup there is going to be something for everyone.
The CFL announced earlier that Montreal and Hamilton will play in Moncton on September 21. Always fun to go to and this year with two of the big favorites from the East it should sell out. Not only does this game feed the fans but it also feeds one of the local organizations a chance to fund raise with the selling of 50/50 tickets. So if you go, buy , buy, buy.
The Football Canada Cup will also be in Moncton this year featuring the best U18 players in the country, July 15th to the 22nd. Football NB has just finished their first round of skills camps and is starting their U18 Pillar Program in three cities, Saint John, Fredericton and Moncton. They are looking to have 200 players out to make the 53 player roster selection. Only in its second year, this program is driving forward and looks like it will become a huge success in 2013.
The Maritime Women’s Football League (MWFL) has been busy preparing for their historic 10th season of operations. With many plans on the go SUPher Bowl X will return to Saint John, where the first ever Canadian women’s provincial tackle championship was played in 2004. While the league has leveled at 4 teams they have grown stronger and more competitive. Moncton, Halifax and the two original teams Fredericton and Saint John will be vying to win the championship on July 20th at KV High field. The MWFL has also launched their new website, mwfl.pointstreaksites.com, and a new logo.
Football Nova Scotia has a new 6 a side spring tackle program starting. It aim is to be an all inclusive program working on skills. Six a side is a very fast and energetic game that allows for better teaching of skills to all players as on offense all players are eligible to catch a pass but for one player.
Football PEI is getting ready to have their big fundraiser on May 4 with the Annual Football PEI and Cerebral Palsy Dinner. This years guest speaker is Dave Stala, a former St Mary’s Huskies player and currently a Hamilton Tigercat receiver.
Football in Newfoundland? Well not yet but there is a very ambitious group looking to get football started on the rock. They are working hard to get it right and make sure that they have covered all areas to give the kids the best opportunity to play for fun and be safe.
While the Eastern Endzone looks crowded there is room for you to get a pass to one of these great events.
