BLOG: It is Time…

It is time for Football Canada to get their structure in order and become a true National Sport Organization (NSO). Times have changed and with government mandates on organizational structure and dwindling subsidies, Football Canada must get their house in order.

The government has mandated organizational restructure and compliance by  October 2014. This mandate came out 2 years ago and football still does not have a completed structure and constitution to match. Under the new structure board members must be elected, have qualifications for positions and be there for the association. The structure of this board will be interesting as it will not need as many directors and therefore some provinces may not have a provincial member. And rightly so, it is time for the members to support the national body with people who can make Football Canada work.

The constitution is outdated and vaguely followed. Many of the policies are being and need to be written more clearly and in most cases created. This has been one of the reasons the national body scores so lowly on rankings towards points for summer games. Not only the need for membership but for the employees they have. The new NSO needs to promote equality in membership,  employment and equality to gender participation.

Maybe with a new structure this NSO would receive their charitable status back, which would be a lift to many football members and projects. After all, in this day and time the majority of sponsors request a charitable number, something that has been refused over the last few years because Revenue Canada recommendations have not been followed. They need to be transparent and publish budgets and expenditures when asked. One can only wonder when there is not transparency.

It is time to stop  and look at what other NSO ‘s have done right. To build a better program and organization the national body needs to be bigger than any one member. Through the history of football this has not been so and members do not pay for all their members, thus robbing Football Canada of growth and funds. It is time to apply equal funds to national teams, to help athletes participate and to layout the plan for development of those programs. The membership fee structure is not fair or equal to player age development and needs to be revamped. Six dollars a player in some cases is a joke to what other national organizations charge but again this goes to membership control.

Plagued with a large amount of problems, Football Canada needs to practice what they preach to their coaches. If a team were run this way they would not execute well or be successful in their program. The only hope left is that they get it right in the short time left, for the love of the game.

It is time…
