BLOG: Junior camp in Poznan, plus Fantasy Football

Last week Kasia went on this website called groupon where you can get all kind of deals for food, travel, and other stuff.  She ended up getting a coupon for sushi that was 50% off.  Buy 90zl and get 180zl to spend on all the food you want.  I don’t allot of sushi, in fact I have only had it a hand full of times and even though it was always alright I much rather eat chicken, steak, or pasta instead.  Bartek, his girl, Kasia, and I went down to the sushi place on Tuesday in Old town Gdansk and just ordered a huge plate of random things.  Like getting the sampler platter at Applebee’s but way more food and a hell of allot more healthy.  We ended up with 38 different pieces and for the first time ever eating sushi I loved it.  I could eat it 3-4 times a week if I could afford it.  To get everything safety-blitz has to offer go to  WWW.SAFETY-BLITZ.NET

After we ate we ended up going to Sopot for a gofry (waffle in Polish) you can get them with whipped cream, fruit, fruit syrup, Nutella and a few other things.  I got the one with whipped cream and Nutella and damn it was so sweet,  I have a sweet tooth but this was way too much for me.  After Kasia thought it would be funny to put Athena in her bag like Paris Hilton.  Athena did not want to get in the bag as she fought it till she realized she was going in and as soon as we took the picture she jumped out.

The next day was Kasias last day here before she headed back home so we ended up going to another beach here in Sopot with Athena.  She loves the water and the second you let her off her leash she will run right for it and start swimming and rolling around it it.  The only problem is after she gets out of the water she wants to roll around in the sand and get all dirty so she always needs a good bath after we come home from the lake or beach.

I was asked earlier that week if I would be willing to head to Poznan (4-5 hr train ride) for the weekend to help run the junior camp and tournament.  Since the PLFA is working on getting clubs to start junior teams (which will make the league and each team stronger) they are holding a couple tournaments since there is no real season yet.  Up here in Sopot we have some Junior kids who practice with us but are too young to play with the seniors so we sent 4 of them down with me to Poznan to get some playing experience.  When we arrived we got picked up by Bartek and one of the other players for their developmental senior team,  we headed to the field for a 2 hr walk thought to get all the guys familiar with what they were doing and ready for the camp the next day.  At the field I met Jose, who I was staying with for the weekend, and a football coach who has coached in Mexico, Spain, Germany, and Poland.  He is the teams DC.  I also met Karol who is one of the head guys of the team and has a huge passion for football.  I just sat back and watched and tried to learn what they were doing on each side of the ball so I could do my best to help on Sunday during the games.

The next day we had the camp.  We were there for just over 5 hours with a 2 hour practice then lunch then another 2 hour practice to finish it up.  When I got there I was asked if I would do the warm ups, so after the introduction I took all 40+ kids and went through some warm up drills.  After that and a little bit of running I was asked if I would lead the “safe” tackling circuit.  This was the one thing that the PLFA said we had to do because just like the NFL and their “heads up” program they want to make sure everyone is doing it safely so no kids get hurt.  After we did that we split off in to Indies for about 45 minutes to go over position drills.  I was doing the defensive line and we had 3 kids from the Cougars who were just big, fast, and destroyed everyone.  I figured they would be the team to beat if you have DL like that who can run down players and blow though the line.  The last thing we did was a drill I call Blood Alley.  Its similar to Oklahoma drill but I put 2-3 OL vs 2-3 DL foot to food in a small space so there is no running outside or dancing around.  One RB and one LB.  They get 4 tries to make it 10 yards (only 2.5 yards a carry) and if the defense stops them the offense does 10 burpies and visa versa.  Its all about power, toughness and will.  I love doing this drill to toughen players up.  It also gets the Offense and the Defense pumped and loud cheering on their teammates.

The Day of the tournament we arrived at the field around 11 and it was very cold and windy.  I was only wearing my shorts and T-shirt because the last two days were very hot and sunny.  I had to barrow a jacked from one of my players while he was playing.  I watched the first game that was between the other Poznan team and the Cougars with those 3 big stud defensive linemen.  It was no contest the DL just destroyed the OL and the poor quarterback was running for his life the whole game.

The next game was the team I was helping with and the same team that the cougars just played.  We had this kid playing fullback named Tomek Gajewski who was just bigger and stronger than everyone else.  He was the Mike Alstot of PLFA JR football that game.  He must have broken 20 tackles and ran over plenty of kids. Also scoring 4 TDs.  At half the coaches took him out to get the other guy some reps and not to tire him out before the next game that day.

The Final score of the first game was 40-6 and 20 minutes after that we had to play the Cougars with the stud defensive linemen.  It was a very close game as both teams had troubles moving the ball for any period of time but in the end  the Cougars came out on top and went through the tournament 2-0.  The 3 guys who play defensive line had a few plays where they just flew though the line untouched and caused havoc in the backfield.  Our center had a hell of a time handling it and put the ball on the ground a few times.  All in all it was a great experience seeing another city, hanging out with some other coaches and being asked to help with a team is a great honor.

I also had a chance to meet up with Ivan after the camp and explore the great city of Poznan.  We walked around for about an hour before we met up with Bartek, Jose, and Karol for a couple beers.  Its a very beautiful city and the center is a great place to hang out.
