Blues set for Labour Day showdown with Hawks

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues football team travels to Waterloo in search of their first win of the season when they take on the Laurier Golden Hawks on Labour Day Monday (Sept. 2) at University Stadium.

The game will be streamed live and live stats will be available via varsityblues.ca.

Toronto is looking for their second straight victory over the Hawks, after blanking the squad, 19-0, in their 2012 season opener at Varsity Centre. That win marked U of T’s first over Laurier since Oct. 5, 1996 and the Blues first shut out win since 1995.

U of T is coming off a 50-14 loss to the Western Mustangs, but despite the lopsided score the Blues coaching staff saw some great positives in the Week 1 game that they will build on Monday night.

“Sunday was a great start for us,” said Varsity Blues head coach Greg Gary. “Putting the final score aside, I thought we executed a lot of things we worked on in camp and it allowed us to identify what we really need to focus on this week. With the extra couple of days of practice this week I’m confident that we will beĀ able to correct mistakes we made in the Western game.

One of those positives was sophomore quarterback Chris Jugovic. The Hamilton, Ont., native was 24-of-39 for 274 yards and one touchdown in his first start in the Blue and White.

Another positive was Toronto’s defensive unit, which ranks second in total tackles, sacks and interceptions after the first week of action. Third-year defensive back and Varsity Blues athlete of the week Trevor Harvey led the way with 9.5 tackles, while standout linebacker Dylan Gordon of Cambridge, Ont., had eight tackles last Sunday.

Laurier is coming off a 21-7 loss to the Guelph Gryphons, which saw them muster only 129 yards on Sunday.

The Blues will head to Ottawa to take on the Gee-Gees (Sept. 7) following Monday’s tilt in Waterloo, before returning home to Varsity Centre when they host the Guelph Gryphons on Saturday, September 14 at 1 p.m.
