Bowen Island athlete joins AUS team’s 2016 class.

Charlie Welsh is switching from the West to East Coast for the next stage of his gridiron career.

Recently, the 6’1 185 pound athlete from Bowen Island, British Columbia signed with Mount Allison Mounties.Β  Welsh will join the team for the 2016 AUS season.

Academics played a prominent role in his decision.

β€œBesides being the top undergraduate university in Canada, it has an awesome learning support centre which will cater to my needs as a student with learning disabilities so that was a very big deal for me,” elaborated Welsh.

Moreover, the New Brunswick campus felt like Welsh’s home away from home.

β€œGoing from Bowen island, British Columbia on the Pacific Ocean to Sackville, New Brunswick on the Atlantic Ocean is quite the distance but when I went to visit in November, I realized there was a bunch of similarities between the small town I live in now and the small town I’m going to be living in for the next four to five years,” offered the defensive back.

Lastly, the strength and reputation of the football program tipped the scale in the Mounties favour.

β€œMount Allison has an outstanding football program that competes for the AUS Championship every year and I am beyond excited to be a part of that tradition in the next few years,” expressed Welsh.

The defensive standout comes to the Mounties after completing a stint with West Vancouver Highlanders of the British Columbia High School Football Association (BCHSFA).
