Broncos win inaugural Manitoba Girls Football Association (MGFA) championship

The Charlsewood Broncos became the first ever champions of the Manitoba Girls Football Association with a 25-12 victory over the first place St. Vital Mustangs. The championship game was a hard fought battle between the cross town rivals.

Their two regular season meetings both went to the undefeated Mustangs, however the Broncos came out today with their game face on. The Broncos played with heart and determination and never gave up. After a quick touchdown by St Vital to start off the game, the Broncos came back with one of their own on an outside run. Three minutes later the Broncos scored another major to take the lead, and never looked back.

“The girls were amazing today, both sides played hard and never quit. The hits were amazing, these 10-12 year old girls hit harder then the boys their age, they run harder and they learn with lightening speed” said Lisa Cummings, MGFA co-founder and Manitoba Fearless team manager/player. “if you didn’t see the pony tails sticking out the back of their helmets you would never know you were watching girls play football.”

“The girls hit so hard and so well that it makes the seasoned coaches giddy just watching.” said Tannis Wilson, commissioner and co-founder of the first year league. “If we could have this tenacity and determination on our senior women’s team we would be unstoppable, I can’t wait till these girls are old enough to play with the Fearless, they are remarkable football players”.

The MGFA was a pilot program for 2011. The 2012 season will see the league open up to all city clubs and hopefully expand to two separate age groups.

“What an amazing introduction to all-girls tackle football. We are working to grow the girls game up to a 16-18 year old junior program within the next 5-8 years. It will be a lot of work but it is a definite labour of love.” said Wilson. “we want to take girls football to the heights that women’s hockey has recently seen. It is all within reach, we just need to take one step at a time.”
