Cambridge Wolverines have a wild weekend


The Cambridge Wolverines had the Wild Wolverine Weekend this past Saturday and Sunday. The Cambridge Minor Football Association fields 11 teams in Southern Ontario Football Association of Leagues (SOFAL) play. All eleven Cambridge teams played home games in the Wild Weekend of football action, with a combined record of 7-4.

On Saturday, Cambridge teams doubled the opposition with a 4-2 record. The undefeated tyke Red Division team squared off against an undefeated Mississauga Warriors crew on Saturday afternoon. The Wolverines handled Mississauga easily, 42-14.

In the opening half, Cambridge went ahead 30-0, on touchdowns from
Nicholas Gruhle, Trevor TJ Figueiredo, Trent Johnson and two by Bryce Rawn, including a sparkling interception return.

Mississauga tried to make a game of it in the second half, scoring two touchdowns, but each time Cambridge quarterback Trent Johnson answered.

In response to Mississauga’s first touchdown, Johnson had a 60 yard run for a Cambridge major.

After their second, Bryce Rawn had a 30 yard kick-off return to setup a fifteen yard touchdown by a diving Johnson.

In Saturday night action, The peewee Red Division Wolverines defeated the Hamilton-Wentworth Panthers 28-14.

Cambridge had some tough luck early as Chris Haas went down with a broken leg.

The game remained close through the first 20 minutes, with each team trading first quarter touchdowns. Halfway through the second quarter, Brandon Metz broke the tie with his second touchdown of the game.

Quarterback Matt Takacs scored a two yard touchdown before the half was over to take Cambridge to the break leading 21-8.

The Panthers tried to fight back, and came within’ a touchdown of the Wolverines when Aaron Hoyte had a big tackle to stop a fourth quarter rally and keep Cambridge ahead 21-14.

With rain pouring down, Cambridge took to the ground as
Takacs and Metz drove to the goal line. Aaron Hoyt finished the series with a touchdown to put the game away.

Hamilton-Wentworth tried one last time to get within’ striking distance of the Wolverines, but this time Bailey Welch had a big tackle to finish of the Panthers.

On Sunday Cambridge teams went 3-2. Sunday afternoon the two bantam White Division teams had impressive victories.

The Bantam Gold team shut out the Brantford Bisons 38-0. They racked up twenty-four points in the first half with touchdowns by Brad MacInnis, Thomas O’Leary and Matt Pavelic. O’Leary was 3-3 kicking for 2 point converts.

Brantford’s most serious threat in the fourth quarter was broken up by a Brad MacInnis interception, followed by a touchdown from Brady Bartlett. Thomas O’Leary again kicked the convert.

Later in the fourth Brad McInnis had a fourty yard kick return called back to the twenty-five yard line for an illegal block. Three plays later Cody Yetman scrambled from the sixteen yard line to finish the scoring.

In the late Sunday afternoon game the bantam Green team won their first of the year, defeating Kitchener 43-8.

Cambridge started the scoring early with a 90 yard opening kick-off return by George Monaghan. With seven seconds off the clock, Cambridge had 6 points.

Monaghan had another run in the second quarter, this time for 49 yards, to make it 12-0.

Later in quarter the Cambridge defence worked some magic, stopping Kitchener a yard short of a first down on a fourth and short. On the ensuing offensive downs quarterback Brayden Hill pushed off of a Kitchener defender to scramble for a first down. Mitch Weiler ended up scoring on a rush from the 30 yard line, ending the quarter 20-0.

In the third quarter Monaghan had a big run causing a first down, before quarterback Hill hit Weiler for a 41 yard touchdown run.

Later in the quarter Hill scrambled from the 40 before passing to Chris Branco for a score. Devin Keeling kicked the two-point convert to put Cambridge up 35-8.

After Kitchener scored early in the fourth the Cambridge defence toughened up, getting two fumble recoveries. This led to a three play drive where Hill threw a ten yard pass to Jackson Moore, with a convert for Keeling, to finish the game Cambridge 43-Kitchener 8.

In other Wild Wolverine Weekend action, the Tyke Gold team lost to Guelph 36-30 while the Green Tykes defeated Brantford 28-0. Late Saturday action saw the atom Red Division team lose in the rain to Brampton 27-6. On Sunday the both peewee White Division teams dropped games. The Golds lost to the Twin Cities Warhawks 12-7 and the Greens lost to Mississauga 18-6. In late Sunday action the bantam Red Division team finished the Wild Wolverine Weekend with, a victory beating Twin Cities 54-0.
