Cambridge Wolverines: Peewee red wolverinces triumph over bisons

Cambridge peewee Red Division Wolverines were looking for big results this past weekend against a tough Brantford Bisons team.

The Bisons showed a lot of jump right from the beginning running the opening kick-off back for a touchdown and an early 8-0 lead .

Cambridge was not to be outdone and quickly advanced the ball right back downfield. Wolverine quarterback Matthew Takacs took full advantage of the protection he got from his offensive line to utilize all his weapons . A slant pass to Griffin Monaghan moved the chains. The very next play Brandon Metz brought the Cambridge faithful to their feet breaking tackles and busting it to the outside for a 55 yard game tying score.

Brantford followed with a bad kick-off giving Cambridge excellent field position . Metz took a handoff all the way to the end-zone giving Cambridge a lead they would never relinquish.

The Wolverine defence got a chance to flex their muscle with big tackles by Dominic Johnson and Alex Leccese which led to a turnover on downs.

Takacs this time methodically marched the offence downfield with pinpoint passes to Johnson and Monaghan. The rally was stopped short with an end-zone interception.

Brantford tried to mount an offensive drive only to be foiled when Alexander Ridley forced a fumble which was then pounced on by Aidan Yearwood. Metz scampered his way into the end-zone giving the team now two scores off turnovers and a 28-8 lead.

Brantford went to their passing game and spread offence only to find the Cambridge secondary of Sean Borkhoff and Bailey Welch more than equal to the task, getting Cambridge the ball back with 1:24 left in the half.

Takacs came out firing with a 25 yard pitch and catch to Monaghan, which set up 34 yard touchdown run by Brandon Metz, making the score 26-8 at the half.

Cambridge started the second half much the way they ended the first. After a catch by Spencer Shiels gave the Wolverines a first down, Carlos Galindo ran a reverse setting up Metz who deked his way through the Bison defence for the score giving Cambridge a commanding lead.

Late in the game Brantford moved the ball all the way down to the Cambridge 1 yard line only to be stymied by a stingy Wolverine defence with outstanding plays by Jared Beeksma , Christian Hodgson and Borkhoff, making the final score 32-8 for the Wolverines.

The win gives the peewee Reds a 5-2 record heading into the last weekend of regular season action. They finish off their season at home against Guelph, this Saturday at 4:00. All Cambridge Wolverine home games are at Debt Freedom Field at Jacob Hespeler Secondary School.

Cambridge’s peewee White Division Green Wolverines squared off Saturday against the Brantford Bisons at Debt Freedom Field in Hespeler. The Bisons were undermanned and had a very inexperienced roster, but they played Cambridge tough for much of the game.

The game started with a series of turnovers, with the ball changing hands due to fumbles a half-dozen or more times in the first half. On the opening kick-off, Cambridge recovered after an on-side kick. Two plays later they fumbled the ball away, but on the next play The Wolverines recovered a Brantford fumble. Josh Nikolic then carried the ball into the end zone to put Cambridge up 6-0.

In the second quarter after a fumble recovery by Garret Jacobs, Cambridge faced a fourth and four. Quarterback Alex Douglas ran a nice option to Nathan McLean to secure the first down. It went for naught, however, and the half ended with the Wolverines holding onto their 6-0 lead.

In the second half Cambridge’s experience, and Brantford’s fatigue began to show. A reverse to McLean led to a ten yard touchdown run, with McLean picking up the convert to make it 14-0 for the Wolverines.

In the fourth quarter Dillon Mann finished things off with a six yard touchdown run.

Late in the game Cambridge attempted the rare peewee field goal, with McLean falling just short on his 31 yard attempt. Cambridge had enough points already, however, and the Wolverines finished with a 22-0 win over the Bisons.

The win gives the peewee Green Wolverines a 6-1 record. They finish the regular season in Kitchener this Saturday.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
