Over the next few days CFC will be previewing each conferences best players and potential award winners. Coach Carlo and his staff worked hard to compile this list of great CIS players.
Can West
MVP
CFC’s Winner:
QB Laurence Nixon, Saskatchewan
Nixon has transformed the Huskies into more of a passing team, ranking second in the nation averaging an astounding 280 yards per game passing. When Nixon plays well, Saskatchewan wins, as 8 of his 9 TDs have come in the Huskies’ 3 wins so far.
Honourable Mentions:
QB Mark Mueller, Regina
Mueller has guided the Rams to an exciting 4-1 record to start off the season and sits just behind Nixon at third in the nation in passing yards. He has 9 total touchdowns to only 3 interceptions and is averaging 270 yards per game through the air.
QB Billy Greene, UBC
The former British Columbia high school player of the year is putting his dual threat abilities on full display this year. He is averaging over 350 total yards per game and has 9 total touchdowns: 6 passing and 3 rushing.
Defensive Player of the Year
CFC’s Winner:
LB Bruce Anderson, Regina
The long-time Ram is the unquestioned leader of Regina’s stout defense. He has posted 34 total tackles and 1 interception and CFL scouts are definitely taking notice.
Honourable Mention:
LB Tyler Greenslade, Alberta
The former Golden Bears’ rookie of the year is living up to expectations this year, posting 43 total tackles, 3.5 sacks and 1 fumble recovery.
DB Ty Noble, Calgary
Noble is the heart and soul of the Dinos’ much improved secondary this year. He has 35 tackles, a sack, fumble recovery and returned an interception 45 yards to the house.
Lineman of the Year
CFC’s Winner:
DL Joel Seutter, Saskatchewan
This sophomore has been penetrating offensive lines all season, posting an astonishing 10 tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks, 2 forced fumbles, 12 solo tackles and 22 total tackles in 5 games.
Honourable Mention:
DE Dale Stevenson, Alberta
The rushing end for the Bears has had quite the productive season putting up 16 solo tackles, 25 total tackles, 6 tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks in just 5 games.
DL Linden Gaydosh, Calgary
This sophomore monster of the middle of the defensive line has had teams figured out ways to avoid him all season after his monstrous freshman year. He still has been a force posting 15 solo tackles, 1 sack, 1 tackle for loss and 20 total tackles.
Special Teams Player of the Year
CFC’s Winner:
K/P Chris Bodnar, Regina
Can we start with this the fact that this Junior is 1/1 passing on the season and for a 73 yard touchdown! Outside of his obvious arm skills, his leg is not too shabby either, making 9 of 12 field goals and hitting 90% of PATs, but his real strength is in punting where he averaged a CIS 5[SUP]th[/SUP] best 41.2 yards per punt this season.
Honourable Mention:
K/P Aaron Ifield, Calgary
This senior made PATs look easy going 10 for 10, as well as hitting 10 of 12 field goals. Like Bodnar from Regina, Aaron made his mark with his punting, downing an amazing 9 balls inside the opposing 20, and averaging 39 yards per punt.
REC/PR Nathan Coehoorn
A top 15 prospect for this years CFL draft Nathan has 35 punt returns for 391 yards and 2 touchdowns.
Rookie of the Year
CFC’s Winner:
QB Eric Dzwilewski, Calgary
Coming into the season Coach Nill was going will Sr Erik Glavic but soon had no choice to start the freshman who makes people dizzier than trying to pronounce his name. This kid threw for 706 yards passing, a 141 ypg average, and ran for a Mike Vick like average of 8.7 yards per scramble. You just couldn’t catch this guy once he left the pocket as he totalled 358 yards rushing on the season.
Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
