Canada West Football Players of the Week 4 (all from the same province)

Fifth-year Regina linebacker Bruce Anderson is the Canada West defensive Player of the Week.

OFFENCE: Laurence Nixon, QB, Saskatchewan
University of Saskatchewan quarterback Laurence Nixon helped the Huskies (2-2) snap a two game losing streak throwing for 423 yards in a 33-9 win over the #7 University of Alberta Golden Bears (2-2) on Friday.

Nixon, in his fifth and final year of eligibility, completed 25-of-34 pass attempts for 423 yards and three touchdowns in the game. His first touchdown pass came in the first quarter, capitalizing on a Golden Bear turnover using just one play to strike Jade Etienne for a 53-yard touchdown. In the third quarter, the Richmond, B.C., native found Etienne again on this time on a 41-yard pass. The final touchdown was a five-yard pass to Mitch Stevens.
Nixon and the Huskies return home to face the University of Manitoba Bisons (1-3), October 1 at Griffiths Stadium in PotashCorp Park. It will be the first time since 2006 that the Bisons have visited Saskatoon.
DEFENCE: Bruce Anderson, LB, Regina
Fifth-year linebacker Bruce Anderson had a fumble recovery, an interception, a pass break-up, and 3Β½ total tackles as the University of Regina Rams scored a 41-6 win over UBC on Friday night in Vancouver.
Anderson’s interception set the tone early for a Rams defence that did not surrender a touchdown to UBC. His pick came on UBC’s second possession of the game and set up a Regina drive that was finished off by an Adrian Charles touchdown run.
Anderson also had a pair of key plays as halftime approached, keeping UBC from mounting any sort of momentum going into the third quarter. He recovered a Billy Greene fumble with under two minutes left in the second quarter, which set the table for a Chris Bodnar field goal and a 20-point Rams lead. He also knocked down a pass in the final minute of the quarter which helped the Rams defence force a two-and-out on UBC’s last possession of the half.
Anderson leads Canada West with four fumble recoveries on the season.

SPECIAL TEAMS: Chris Bodnar, P/K, Regina
Punter/kicker Chris Bodnar was successful on four of his five field goal attempts, averaged 44 yards per punt, and hit safety Matt Yausie for a 73-yard touchdown pass during the #6-ranked University of Regina Rams (3-1) 41-6 win over the UBC Thunderbirds (1-3) on Friday night in Vancouver.
Bodnar hit two field goals 20 yards out, one from 32, and one from 37. He was 4-for-4 in PATs and added a late rouge as the third-year kicker accounted for 17 of the team’s 41 points. He becomes the only University of Regina kicker other than Perri Scarcelli to hit four field goals in a single game.
Bodnar also punted six times for an average of 44 yards per punt, including a 62-yarder in the third quarter that stands as the second longest by a Canada West punter this season. His touchdown pass to Yausie came on a fake punt early in the fourth quarter.
Bodnar leads Canada West with 40 points scored this year.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
