Canada West Football Players of the Week: Anthony Coombs, Levar Hayden


EDMONTON – Manitoba Bisons running back Anthony Coombs and UBC defensive back Levar Hayden are Week #6 Canada West football Players of the Week.


OFFENCE: #1 Anthony Coombs, Manitoba

Anthony Coombs was a one-man scoring machine as he rattled off four rushing touchdowns, tied for fourth-most in a single game in conference history, and accumulated 226 rushing yards on 20 carries for an impressive 11.3 average during a 48-20 home win versus Alberta on Saturday.

The rookie running back had a TD runs of 69 yards and one yard in the first quarter, followed by his third of the half in the second quarter, five yards. Coombs had an amazing 180 yards and three TDs at half and the Bisons began to rest starters in the second half, but not before he added a fourth rush TD from 12 yards.

The 226 rushing yards is the most so far in a single game during the 2011 Canada West season. In addition, the Winnipeg native had two receptions for 13 yards in the 28 point victory.

Coombs is first in Canada West all-purpose yards with 996 yards, third 472 rushing yards and tied for fourth with five touchdowns.

Manitoba (3-3) now travels to play in Calgary against the CIS #2-ranked Calgary Dinos (6-0) on Saturday, October 22 at 1:00 p.m.

DEFENCE: #22 Levar Hayden, UBC

UBC defensive back Levar Hayden intercepted two Zach Oleynik passes in 23-16 Thunderbirds win over Regina on Saturday, October 15th in Vancouver.

In the third quarter with his team up 13-7, Hayden killed a Regina drive by picking off a Oleynik pass at the UBC 23-yard line.

In the fourth quarter, Regina was down 20-9 and trying to get back into the game, but Hayden recorded his second interception of the day at the Regina 42-yard line and ran the ball back 31 yards to set up a field goal to make the score 23-9.

Hayden also led UBC with a team-high 7.5 tackles and knocked away an Oleynik pass into the end zone for Brenden Owens with eight seconds left to help preserve the win.

The CIS #9-ranked Thunderbirds (4-2) travel to Alberta (0-6) for a game on Saturday, Oct. 22.
