EDMONTON β UBC quarterback Billy Greene has been named Canada West offensive Player of the Week for a second straight week, while Calgary Dinos LB Sam Hurl was the top defensive player.
OFFENCE: #11 Billy Greene, UBC
For the third time this season and second consecutive week, fourth-year UBC Thunderbirds quarterback Billy Greene is the Canada West Player of the Week.
Greene led CIS #6 UBC to its first playoff victory in 12 years on Saturday, a 27-22 win over #10 Saskatchewan in front of 3006 fans at Thunderbird Stadium, completing27 of 44 passes and threw for two touchdowns, while rushing for another.
With 1:21 left in the game and his team up 20-15, Greene found David Scott in the end zone from 17 yards out for what would turn out to be the winning touchdown.
Greeneβs first touchdown pass, to Jordan Grieve in the third quarter, gave UBC the lead for the first time in the game (10-3). His one-yard TD run on the final play of the third quarter put the Thunderbirds up 17-6.
UBC will now head to Calgary to face the Dinos in the 75th Hardy Cup game on Friday, a game broadcast live across Canada on TSN at 6:00 p.m. Mountain Time.
DEFENCE: #28 Sam Hurl, Calgary
Sam Hurl posted impressive stats in Fridayβs 16-4 conference semifinal win by the University of Calgary Dinos over visiting Regina at McMahon Stadium in Calgary.
The third-year linebacker recorded a game-high 10 tackles β seven of them solo, adding two sacks for 13 yards and one break-up for a Dinos defence that allowed just 188 yards of offence.
Hurl, 2010 Canada West Presidentβs Award nominee as Outstanding Defensive Player, had a team-high 52 tackles (37 solo) during the regular season, second-best in Canada West.
The three-time defending champion Dinos now host the 75th Hardy Cup final on Friday, Nov. 11, live on TSN at 6:00 p.m. MST.
