Canada West football Players of the Week: Dzwilewski, Martinez, Demski

OFFENCE: #11 Eric Dzwilewski, Calgary
Third-year pivot Eric Dzwilewski directed a balanced Calgary offence as the third-ranked Dinos opened their 2012 season with a 37-21 win over the Regina Rams Saturday night at McMahon Stadium.
The Boise, Idaho-raised quarterback picked up his first career 300-yard passing game, completing 25 of 38 tosses for 307 yards and a pair of touchdowns as the Dinos racked up 480 yards of total offence on the night. Dzwilewski added 29 yards on the ground on five carries, averaging 5.8 yards per rush. His touchdowns were a 65-yarder over the middle to rookie Brett Blaszko as well as a nice ball in the corner of the end zone to Jake Harty.
Dzwilewski, who has lost just three games in his career as the starting quarterback, is inching closer to the career 3,000-yard passing mark, moving past Erik Glavic into ninth spot on the Dinos’ all-time list. He’ll continue to move up the ladder as the Dinos host the Alberta Golden Bears Friday night in KICKOFF 2012, the University of Calgary’s annual homecoming game.

DEFENCE: #10 Travoy Martinez, Saskatchewan
Saskatchewan Huskies cornerback Travoy Martinez made an impact in his first CIS game with two interceptions in a Huskie 32-0 victory over the Alberta Golden Bears.
The Arts & Science student from Dallas, Texas snared his first interception in the corner of the end zone at 8:19 in the fourth quarter. It was Alberta’s closest chance to scoring in the game.  His second interception came on the next Alberta possession. Martinez nabbed the ball at the Huskie 42 yard line and returned it 25 yards.
He also added two breakups and five tackles in his debut, as well as 48 yard kickoff return.
Martinez and the No. 8 Huskies travel to Winnipeg to meet the Manitoba Bisons Saturday at 1 p.m.

SPECIAL TEAMS: #9 Nic Demski, Manitoba
Manitoba Bisons running back/kick returner Nic Demski started the 2012 campaign with a blast. He had a spectacular 96 yard punt return TD at the start of the third quarter and added overall total of 115 punt return yards on four returns and added 35 yards on kickoffs on two returns. His effort led to the Bisons road win at #7 UBC by a score of 31-24 on Saturday, September 1.
The second year kick returner/running back added to his young CIS resume with another electrifying return as he weaved his way through a maze of players for a 96 yard punt return for a touchdown. He now has three return for TDs in his career (two on kickoffs).
The 18 year-old sophomore is first in Canada West in punt return average at 28.8 (4 returns/115 yards) plus fifth in conference kickoff returns with 17.5 average (2 returns/35 yards). Plus he is second in Canada West all-purpose yards with 225 (115 – punt return; 52 rush; 35 kickoff return; 23 receiving).
He also added a six yard TD run in the road win and tied for first in Canada West with two touchdowns in 2012.
Manitoba (1-0) now host the #8 Saskatchewan Huskies at home on Saturday, September 8 at 1:00 p.m. CT. held at University Stadium (U of Manitoba campus).
