Canada West Football Players of the Week: Gaydosh, Greene & Prince

EDMONTON – UBC quarterback Billy Greene, Calgary defensive lineman Linden Gaydosh and Alberta kick returner Dillon Prince have earned Week #4 Canada West football Athlete of the Week honours.

OFFENCE: #11 Billy Greene, UBC

Fourth-year UBC quarterback Billy Greene was a difference-maker in the Thunderbirds’ 29-23 win over #10 Manitoba on Saturday, Sept. 24 in Vancouver.

Greene not only passed for over 300 yards, including three touchdowns, but was second on the team in rushing, with 71 yards and an 8.9-yard average. He found veteran receiver Jordan Grieve for one TD, while Micha Theil had the other two receiving majors. as the CIS #9-ranked T-Birds won a back-and-forth contest that leaves them alone in second place.

Manitoba entered the game as the top passing defence in Canada West, but Greene completed 17 of 30 passes and had no interceptions. His scrambling ability also kept the Bisons defence guessing.

Greene, who is moving up the Canada West all-time passing list, leads the conference with 1173 passing yards, 11 TD passes, is the only starting QB not to throw a pick and he sits fifth in league rushing, with 315 yards and a lofty 10.9 yards per carry, including one touchdown.

The Surrey, B.C. product gets a big test on Friday, Sept. 30th when UBC heads to Saskatoon, where Brian towriss and the Saskatchewan Huskies look to end a two-game losing streak.

DEFENCE: #93 Linden Gaydosh, Calgary

Third-year University of Calgary defensive lineman was in the face of Saskatchewan Huskies quarterbacks all night Friday.

Gaydosh tied a school and Canada West conference record with four sacks as Calgary held the Huskies to just 90 passing yards in a 38-24 home win Friday at McMahon Stadium, the Dinos’ first home victory over Saskatchewan since October 2000.

Gaydosh set the tone early, bowling his way through the Huskies O-line to get to Jahlani Gilbert-Knorren on the very first offensive play of the game. His second came on the last play of the opening quarter, and he added two more in the fourth – including one on the last offensive play of the game. Gilbert-Knorren and Trent Peterson were each sacked twice by the 6-foot-4, 305-pound Gaydosh, who was the 2009 CIS rookie of the year.

He now sits tied for the conference lead with four sacks on the year. The single-game performance matched two previous four-sack outings in University of Calgary history (Rob Richards, 1995; Chris Konrad, 1992). Cory Bymoen (UBC, 1995) and Michael Little (Simon Fraser, 2004) also recorded four sacks in one game and share the Canada West single-game record.

Gaydosh and the Dinos (4-0) face the winless, 0-4 Alberta Golden Bears Sunday, Oct. 2 at McMahon Stadium in a rematch of the 2010 Hardy Cup, live on Shaw TV and QR77 radio.

SPECIAL TEAMS: #4 Dillon Prince, Alberta

Freshman University of Alberta Golden Bears receiver and kick returner Dillon Prince is the Canada West Special Teams Football Player of the Week.

The rookie from Raymond, Alta picked up 182 kick-off return yards, on six attempts, as well as 195 all-purpose yards in an effort to spark the Golden Bears during their 38-14 loss to the Regina Rams.

Prince certainly did his best to turn the tide for the Bears, averaging 30 yards a return on his first six CIS career kick-off returns. The freshman routinely streaked past, and danced around would be Ram tacklers in an effort to give the Bears offence the best possible conditions.

Combined with veteran receiver Jess Valleau, who recorded a 100-yard kick-off return TD in week two and was the conference special teams athlete of the week that same week, Alberta now has a very dangerous special teams return unit.

Prince and the Golden Bears will get chance to make an impact once again as they travel to Calgary this Sunday to take on the undefeated Dinos at 1:00pm.
