Canada West Players of Week: Parker & Gerbrandt

OFFENCE: Anthony Parker, WR, Calgary
Fourth-year receiver Anthony Parker did it all for the University of Calgary Dinos in Saturday’s 40-33 win over the Regina Rams in Canada West semi-final action.

Offensively, he was unstoppable. On just five catches, the 2009 second team All-Canadian racked up 145 yards and three touchdowns, including a 70-yard bomb on the opening play of the game. His TDs came from 70, 20, and 45 yards from two different quarterbacks. He averaged 29 yards per catch on the afternoon and added 26 rushing yards to his total.
He totalled 267 all-purpose yards in the contest.
The Dinos (7-2) host the surprising Alberta Golden Bears (4-5) for the 74th Hardy Cup Championship Saturday, Nov. 13 at McMahon Stadium. Kickoff is slated for 3:00 p.m., , to be broadcast live across Western Canada on Shaw TV and on Shaw Direct 299, with the winner earning the right to host the Atlantic champion in the CIS Mitchell Bowl the following week.

DEFENCE: Craig Gerbrandt, DE, Alberta
Fifth-year Alberta Golden Bears’ defensive end Craig recorded seven tackles and two sacks as Alberta stunned No. 3 Saskatchewan in a Canada West semifinal in Saskatoon.
After the Huskies stormed out to a 30-3 lead through two and a half quarters, Gerbrandt helped the Bears defence shut the door on Saskatchewan quarterback Laurence Nixon, and the rest of the Huskie offence. Smothering the Saskatchewan attack, the Golden Bears offence was able to put together 28 straight points as Alberta shocked Saskatchewan with a 31-30 win, their first playoff win since 2005.
Gerbrandt is Alberta’s all-time sack leader, and is coming off a career season in 2009 in which he led the conference in sacks (10), and was named a CIS second team all-Canadian, and the Canada West JP Metras trophy nominee for best lineman in the country.
Gerbrandt and the Golden Bears now travel to Calgary to face the Dinos for the 74th Hardy Cup, in the Canada West championship game. Kickoff is 3:00 p.m. on Saturday at McMahon Stadium, to be broadcast live across Western Canada on Shaw TV and on Shaw Direct 299.

SPECIAL TEAMS: Anthony Parker, PR/KR, Calgary
On special teams Anthony Parker of calgary was vital to the Dinos’ success. He had one missed field goal return for 38 yards, then added four kickoff returns for 58 yards. However, one of those kickoff returns came off a late Regina onside kick attempt, which he successfully caught and then headed out of bounds to give the Dinos the ball as they held on for the victory.
He totalled 267 all-purpose yards in the contest.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
