Canada West: Week 1 players of week

Offence: Julian Marchand, QB, Alberta

University of Alberta Golden Bears’ football quarterback Julian Marchand is the Canada West Football Athlete of the Week, for the week ending September 5, 2010.

After one season as the back-up quarterback for the Golden Bears, the fourth-year took his first start for Alberta, giving the Evergreen and Gold a win in their season-opener on the road. The Calgary native completed 22 of 36 passes for 358 yards and three touchdowns in a 36-28 win over the UBC Thunderbirds Saturday afternoon in Vancouver.

With a marginal 15-14 lead going into halftime, Marchand widened the gap for Alberta in the third quarter, by tossing two TD strikes, which were part of a 21-point run by the Bears to start the second-half.

When the game was over, Marchand had passed to eight different Bears, with five of them earning 24 yards or more on a single play. He also finished the game ranked second in the country, and first in Canada West, in passing yards and touchdowns.

Alberta (1-0) heads to Winnipeg next weekend where they play the University of Manitoba Bisons at University Stadium.

Defence: Steve Famulak, DB, Regina

Third-year defensive back Steve Famulak had a brilliant outing on Friday night for the University of Regina Rams in their season-opening 45-11 win over Manitoba.

Famulak had two solo sacks during the game and teamed up with Akiem Hicks on a third. His sack early in the second quarter forced a fumble by Manitoba quarterback Khaleal Williams, which teammate Bruce Anderson scooped up and rumbled in for a 48-yard major – the first of three defensive touchdowns that the Rams would score in the win.

All told, Famulak’s 2.5 sacks – the first sacks of his three-year career with the Rams – went for a total loss of 23 yards.

Famulak also tied for the team lead 5.5 tackles and recorded a pass breakup late in the game for good measure.
