Canada West: Week 2 players of week

Offence: Eric Dzilewski, QB, Calgary
Pure freshman Eric Dzwilewski was poised in the pocket in Friday night’s 24-21 Calgary win over Regina at McMahon Stadium.

The rookie out of Boise, Idaho, starting in place of Hec Crighton Trophy winner Erik Glavic, completed 13 of 20 passes for 258 yards and two touchdowns, both beauties to Richard Snyder. He secured the ball and didn’t throw a single interception, and he made the Rams respect his running ability as well. He racked up 62 yards on seven carries, including one 23-yard scamper. Not bad for an 18-year-old in his first-ever CIS football game – and his first-ever start in Canadian rules football.
Dzwilewski and the Dinos (1-1) head north to face the first-place University of Alberta Golden Bears (2-0) this Saturday afternoon.

Defence: Nathan Kanya, LB, UBC
Nathan Kanya led a rejuvenated UBC defensive effort on Friday with nine tackles (seven solo, four assists) including four tackles for a loss and a pair of sacks as the T-Birds upset no. 2 ranked Saskatchewan 31-12 in Saskatoon.
Behind Kanya’s play, the T-Bird defence racked up six sacks and held the Huskies to only 272 total yards of offence. A fifth-year linebacker from Hamilton, Ont., Kanya is tied for the Canada West lead with 17 tackles and ranks first in tackles for a loss with five and a half after two games of the 2010 Canada West season.

Special Teams: Nathan Coehoorn, Calgary
With five All-Canadians sidelined for the Calgary Dinos Friday night, one of the three that remained stepped it up big time.
Fourth-year receiver Nathan Coehoorn, a first team All-Canadian wide receiver last season, was pressed into service on special teams to return punts and kicks. And he put up big numbers.
Coehoorn returned 10 punts a total of 182 yards, including a monster 76-yard punt return TD that gave the Dinos some badly-needed insurance just two minutes after they scored the go-ahead touchdown in the third quarter.
The Dinos (1-1) head to Edmonton this Saturday to face the first-place, 2-0 Alberta Golden Bears.
