‘Canes battle Saint John Seawolves for AFL’s Moosehead Cup

Charlottetown, PE – It wasn’t exactly the season that the β€˜Canes had scripted, but following an upset playoff victory over the Dalhousie University Tigers, the third-place β€˜Canes find themselves in the championship final for the third consecutive year, this time against the heavily favoured regular season champions the UNB Saint John Seawolves. The Moosehead Cup game will be playedΒ this Saturday at 4 p.m.Β at the UNB Saint John Canada Games Stadium.

β€œObviously, we’re coming into this game as the underdog, and we know we have our work cut out for us. However, our team is healthy, and we’ve been playing our best football of the season the last two games,” said head coach Mark MacDougall.

The Seawolves finished first this season with a regular season record of 5-1, capturing the Jack Irving Cup. Last weekend in their semi-final match up, the Seawolves dominated the defending AFL champions, the UNB Fredericton Red Bombers, winning 44-14. The Hurricanes defeated the Dalhousie University Tigers in Halifax 21-16 in a playoff contest where the β€˜Canes defence held off the Tigers in the fourth quarter.

β€œThe Seawolves are capable of putting a lot of points on the board, so our defence will have to come up big with the same effort as last week,” said MacDougall.

Offensively, the Hurricanes will be looking to establish a balanced attack and make full use of their offensive weapons. β€˜Canes quarterback Christian Hackney poses a double threat to defences, as he can throw the long ball or go underneath with equal authority. He has also shown that he can run the ball when the opportunity presents itself.

β€œI have a great receiving corps, and great running backs to choose from. We’ve been working hard on our execution this week, and I feel that we are ready to for the biggest game of the year,” said Hackney.

The webcast of the game will be accessible through the Seawolves website,Β www.seawolvesfootball.ca. Fans hoping to travel to Saint John for the game are encouraged to visit the Hurricanes Facebook page atΒ facebook.com/HCFootballΒ if they would like to car pool.
