Carabins come from behind to knock off #1 Laval

The young Carabins football team from the University of Montreal snatched a dramatic 17-12 victory over Laval University with a touchdown by Rotrand SenΓ© with less than a minute to go, sending the crowd of 5,100 supporters gathered at CEPSUM Saturday afternoon into a frenzy. This is the first defeat of the Rouge et or since October 4, 2009, when they lost 28 – 7 to the Carabins.

Since 2004, Montreal is the only Quebec conference school to defeat the Rouge et Or, four times, including three in the last five games played at CEPSUM. With 18 rookies in the line up and several injured absent, the group led by head coach Danny Maciocia showed no fear against the team ranked number one in Canada.

The Carabins accumulated 422 offensive yards against the powerful defense of Laval while only allowing 274. Players united in adversity “The team has always been welded together and our players never stopped working”, Maciocia said, referring to the various distractions that occurred in recent weeks. “There is never any cracks in the foundation and I am so happy for our players. They have just taken a huge accomplishment. ”

While the Carabins trailed 12-11, Sene found an opening and crossed the goal line after a run of 13 yards. After an attempted two-point conversion failed, the Carabins defense completely shut the door. “This is an exceptional feeling, indescribable” summarized SenΓ© about his TD. “During the week I asked Danny to give me the ball a little more and I’m glad he did. The offensive line has done a job and I did not hesitate to know which hole to take,” said Sene who accumulated 111 yards on 22 carries.

Carabins Defensive end Jonathan Pierre-Etienne had a phenomenal game with a total of 14 tackles and 4.5 sacks for losses of 30 yards. The Carabins defense gave a lot of trouble to quarterback Bruno Prud’homme of the Rouge et Or, who was sacked a total of eight sacks. He finished 17 of 24 passes for gains of 265 yards.

Carabins QB, Alexandre Nadeau-Piuze managed 13 of 28 for 190 yards.

Laval led 9-3 at halftime. Mike Dubuisson managed an interception at the expense of Prud’homme. The following sequence led to the first field goal by Pierre-Paul GΓ©linas, a distance of 37 yards. In the early minutes of the second quarter, Julian Feoli-Gudino caught a great 39 yards pass from Prud’homme. Two plays later, a touchdown pass of 29 yards to Seydou Junior Haidara.

Boris Bede added two singles for the Rouge et Or who led 9-3 by retreating to the locker room. Carabins started to chip back in the third quarter with a 21 yard field goal by GΓ©linas.

With just over two minutes to go, Laval gave up a safety to make the score 12-11. The next play, Nadeau-Piuze led the Carabins down the field to set up the Sene winner.
