Carabins’ commits believe in coaches

The Carabins add two QuƩbec commits to their 2019 class.

When it came down to it, CFC60 Mathieu Renault, a receiver from CollĆØge Montmorency, and Thierry Bernier, an offensive lineman from CollĆØge AndrĆ©-Grasset, put their faith in the University of MontrĆ©al coaches, and they will give the team their all when it’s their turn to see the field.

In his ten-year career, Mathieu Renault has grown to know quite a few players in QuĆ©bec. ā€œI chose to commit to the University of MontrĆ©al for many reasons. One of them is that I know a lot of guys on the team that I played with in the past and this made me feel at home,ā€ he said. ā€œAlso, I want to play for a winning team with a great history.ā€

During his cĆ©gep career, Renault played with Les Nomades du CollĆØge Montmorency (RSEQ Division 2). He said that some of the Carabinsā€™ coaches coached him while with Les Nomades and that he liked to work with them. ā€œI felt like the coaches believe in me and I think that itā€™s the best coaching staff that can help me develop as a man and (as a) football player,ā€ he added.

Renault, who is 6ā€™2, 203lbs, will be taking civil engineering. Before joining Les Nomades, he spent two years with Les Vikings de Laval-Nord in his hometown of Laval, QuĆ©bec. He then spent four years with his high school team, Les Loups de CurĆ©-Antoine Labelle (RSEQ). He won a Bol dā€™Or with Les Loups in 2014.

Thierry Bernier

When looking at universities, Thierry Bernier decided not to stray far from home. Hailing from St-Eustache, QuĆ©bec, he said he chose MontrĆ©al because he can stay near his family and friends. ā€œI also chose it because I believe in the offensive lineman coach and Iā€™m sure he can bring me to another level. I knew (him) from Team QuĆ©bec in 2016,ā€ he said.

ā€œI think the coaching staff is amazing,ā€ he added. ā€œEven with the changes they made, Iā€™m sure they will be a great group for every player.ā€

At a towering 6ā€™3, 265lbs, Bernier has seen his fair share of teams. He spent three years with Les Lions de Deux-Montagne, five with Les Empereurs du CollĆØge Letendre (RSEQ high school) and three with Les PhĆ©nix du CollĆØge AndrĆ©-Grasset (RSEQ Division 1). In 2014 he won a silver medal at the Spalding Cup and was named to the first all-star team. He was also a two-time best lineman of the year with Letendre in 2015 and 2016.

Bernier is interested in taking human relations.
