Carabins loss to St. Mary’s sanction overturned on second appeal

The University of Montreal has obtained a satisfactory result on the second appeal in the case of using an ineligible player during the football game against St. Mary’s September 17th. The RSEQ has decided not to sanction the Carabins with a loss after playing defensive back Mike Dubuisson while he was under a suspension of three football games by Football QuΓ©bec.

Believing that he was suspended for two games, the Carabins had not used his services during the first two games of the season. The UdeM will be awarded ts two points, the ones awarded during the 11 -10 win, and now have a record of five wins against two losses.

“We are obviously very pleased with this decision”, says the director of sports programs at UdeM, Manon Simard. “We decided to go through this process because we were convinced of the merits of our approach.”

The second appeal to the RSEQ acknowledged flaws in the decision processes. The UdeM also defended their view by showing recent cases of similar sanctions.

“The RSEQ confirmed to us from the beginning that we had been in good faith but we had made a clerical error, mistake we accepted as the beginning of our discussions on this issue,” says Manon Simard. “We did not challenge the suspension, but the severity of the sanction. ”

The second appeal gave a penalty to the Carabins, results of this administrative error, and the UdeM will pay a fine of two thousand five hundred dollars.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
