Carabins pick up two more Montréalers

Two Montréal area recruits commit to the Carabins.

Sometimes you don’t have to look too far to find talented players and the Montréal Carabins know that all too well as they pick up two local recruits, Gabriel Morel from Collège André-Grasset and Felix Laflamme from Collège Montmorency.

Morel is currently living in Sainte-Catherine, a southern, off-island suburb of Montréal. He plays with the Collège André-Grasset Phénix (Réseau du sport étudiant du Québec Division 1). The young football player had many reasons for committing to Montréal. Among the reasons was its proximity to his hometown and the fact that the program he is looking into, interior security and police study, is only offered at Montréal out of all the Quebec schools.

“The football program seemed to me to be one of the best in the Canada. I want to be pushed hard and develop my skills to a higher level and perform. It appealed to me because, last year during my season, I was having a good season and the coaches came to me telling me that they would like to invite me to the university to visit it so I accepted,” Morel said.

Morel was also swayed by the new installations put in by the university. He said that all the things that the football players have to help them succeed in school and in football are incredible.

The young outside linebacker’s choice was most particularly influenced by the coaching staff, which he called unbelievable. “All together they have more than 100 years of experience. All the work that they put in the program to always make it better is also unbelievable,” he said.

“Maciocia (the head coach) is a mastermind of football and he knows how to lead a football team. All the other coaches know their football like master also and know how to take advantage of every player,” Morel added.

Morel, who was born in Alma, Lac St-Jean, Quebec, has been playing football since the age of eight and, given that he is 20 years old, it has been 12 years since he started the game. He started his career with the LaPrairie Diablos when he was eight and after that, he played two years of midget with the Saint-Hubert Rebelles.

The linebacker has had an impressive resume of football achievements. In 2005, he won Offensive MVP and the Montréal Metro trophy. In 2009, while playing peewee, he won the Old Alouettes trophy. In 2011, he was named Defensive MVP in his second year of bantam. In 2012, he was a member of Team Quebec. In the same year, he was named the best defensive back in the Quebec Minor Football League during his first year of midget.

While he was selected to play with Team Canada in 2013, an injury prevented him from joining the team. In that same year, after recovering from his injury, he was named the best linebacker in the QMFL. His team had a perfect record of 10-0, although they failed to capture the championship. In 2015, he was a nominee for Defensive MVP, however he didn’t win the title.

Morel has been a Montréaler for the past three years. He admires the city and calls it beautiful with a lot of nice things to do. He also enjoys the convenience of the public transportation.

Laflamme comes from the northern, Montréal suburb of Sainte Thérése. He is a member of Les Nomades du Collège Montmorency (RSEQ Division 1). The young football player brings size to his wide receiver position, towering at 6’1, 210lbs.

“I went to the Université de Montréal because I trust all the coaches there and I felt like I’m in a family,” Laflamme said. “The Carabins are doing good. I want to play for the team.”

He added that he has been playing football for eight years. In that time, Laflamme won the Canada Cup with Team Quebec in 2016. He also played with U18 Team Canada, winning the cup in the 2016 International Bowl. When he reaches university, he said he is going into either physical education or international studies.
