Carabins rely on running attack to cruise past Redmen

MONTREAL – Manuel Crisi-Lauzon rushed for a pair of touchdowns and Sean Thomas-Erlington ran for another as the No.6-ranked Montreal Carabins spoiled McGill’s Homecoming game with a 28-3 victory over the Redmen at Molson Stadium, Saturday.

BOXSCORE

It was the 15th straight win for the Carabins over their cross-town rivals, dating back to a Redmen sweep in 2002.

The game was a defensive struggle throughout the first half, with Montreal only leading 2-0 after the opening quarter and just 11-0 after two on a pair of safeties and a six-yard TD run by Crisi-Lauzon, who finished with 18 carries for 74 yards.

Thomas-Erlington made it 18-0 on a three-yard scamper in the final minute of the third stanza. He ended up with 110 yards rushing on 17 carries.

The Carabins racked up 480 yards of offence thanks primarily to a strong ground attack that featured six players combining for 273 rushing yards.

McGill, which generated only 159 yards of net offence, registered their lone scoring play on a 37-yard field-goal by Samy Rassy early in the final quarter, narrowing the game to 18-3.

A smothering Carabins defence kept both McGill quarterbacks largely ineffective. Freshman starter Pierre-Luc Dussault was 9-for-15 for 58 yards. He gave way in the final quarter to veteran Jonathan Collin, who only fared slightly better. He passed for 106 yards, completing 9-of-13 attempts.

Crisi-Lauzon put the game out of reach midway through the fourth to make the score 25-3 and Felix Menard-Briere rounded out the scoring with a 28-yard field goal.

The Carabins, who clinched a playoff berth in the RSEQ conference, are in a dogfight for second-place with the upstart Bishop’s Gaiters. Both teams are 5-2 with one game remaining before playoffs. Montreal will wrap up their regular season schedule next week when they host division-leading Laval (6-0).

McGill, which dropped to 3-4, now faces a must-win game at Bishop’s next Saturday in order to qualify for playoffs.
