LENNOXVILLE, Que. β A pair of late first-half touchdowns led the No. 4-ranked Montreal Carabins to a 36-22 win over the Bishop’s Gaiters in CIS football action today at Coulter Field. The Homecoming crowd of 2,165 saw the Carabins turn a 10-6 deficit into a 20-10 halftime lead with two touchdowns in the last minute of the second quarter.
The Gaiters had taken a 10-6 lead after a first-quarter touchdown by Shane McDonald (Uxbridge, Ont.) and a Mathieu Paquette (Magog, Que.) field goal with 2:24 left in the half.
With 1:08 left in the half, the Gaiters elected to punt the ball on third down from the four-yard line, and Alexandre Fortier-LabontΓ© ran it back to the Gaiters’ ten. On the next play, Rotrand SenΓ© scored the first of his two touchdowns to give the Carabins the lead.
Matters went from bad to worse for Bishop’s when they fumbled the ensuing kickoff, giving Montreal the ball on the Bishop’s 35. Two plays later, Alexandre Nadeau-Piuze found Fortier-LabontΓ© on a nine-yard scoring pass, extending the visitors’ lead to 20-10.
SenΓ©’s second major, with 34 seconds left in the third quarter, put the game out of reach. Four field goals by Pierre-Paul Gelinas, a third-quarter safety touch and an 80-yard kickoff single rounded out the Montreal scoring.
The Gaiters mounted a late charge in the fourth quarter, as Jordan Heather (Oromocto, N.B.) found David Haddrall (Kingston, Ont.) on a 22-yard pass and Alexander Fox (Montreal West, Que.) on a 12-yard score. A pair of two-point convert attempts fell short, and the Gaiters could draw no closer.
Montreal gained 387 yards of net offence, while the Gaiters finished with 296. Montreal committed five turnovers, all in the first half, while the Gaiters turned the ball over four times.
For Bishop’s, Heather went 22-for-43 for 233 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. His favourite target was Steven Turner (Brampton, Ont.), who caught eight passes for 48 yards. Fox made four catches for 67 yards, while Haddrall caught four for 55. Heather was also the Gaiters’ leading rusher, with 49 yards on three carries
Sene finished with 94 rushing yards for Montreal. Nadeau-Piuze completed 17 passes for 223 yards, but threw three interceptions. Maxime Fournier-Rioux led Montreal’s receivers with four catches for 88 yards.
Defensively, the Gaiters were led by O’Shane Daley (Scarborough, Ont.), who made 6.5 tackles, intercepted a pass and knocked down another. Dan West (Ajax, Ont.) finished with 6.5 tackles, while Jermaine-Lewis-Parris (Brampton, Ont.) had five.
Montreal was led by Jonathan Beaulieu-Richard’s 7.5 tackles, while rookie Byron Perez-Archambault made 5.5 tackles, including a sack.
Montreal (3-1) is next in action on Saturday, October 1, as they visit No. 5 Sherbrooke. The Gaiters’ (1-3) next game is set for Friday, September 30, as they visit the McGill Redmen. Kickoff at Molson Stadium in Montreal is set for 7 p.m.
