CEGEP recruit finds ‘best place’ with Vanier Cup Champions

Mont-Saint-Hilaire lineman recently joins RSEQ team’s 2015 class.

After careful consideration, Alexander Meijer made a logical decision of where he would commence his CIS career.

Recently, the 6’3, 310 pound defensive lineman (tackle/right guard) from Mont-Saint-HIlaire, Quebec signed with the Montreal Carabins.  Meijer will join the Vanier Cup Champions for the 2015 RSEQ season.

“I had many full ride offers from different universities but I had to find a way to cut down and choose one,” said Meijer.  “I stepped away from anything outside of province for the fact that it would still cost me a considerable amount of money to go to university whereas Quebec covered all of my tuition.”

“It’s also a great school for education which I intend on eventually applying in. I also liked the football program and what I had seen from the coaching staff. They were all very cool people and I felt part of the team even before I signed, as cheesy that may sound. I also considered that it was the best place for me to develop my game, since there is also I chance that I will switch and play on the offensive side of the ball, which I have done in the past just not with a lot of technique. Of course, being this year’s national champs influenced my decision, but it was not the main reason. I’ve had a chance to talk to a few guys on the team and they seemed to be really cool guys as well.”

The lineman comes to the Carabins after finishing a stint with CEGEP Division 3 team, Champlain St. Lambert Cavaliers. This past season, he was named Division 3 Defensive MVP and selected as a league All-Star as he registered 36 tackles, recorded three sacks, a batted pass and blocked a field goal.

Prior to the Cavaliers, Meijer suited up for the Richelieu Pirates.
