CÉGEP10 RANKINGS Week 3: Saint-Jean send the rankings into a tailspin

1. André-Grasset Phénix (3-0)
Andre-Grasset hadn’t faced any of the top teams yet, but they passed their first test with a 33-24 victory over Champlain. CFC60 Jonathan Senecal was back to him normal self tossing three touchdown passes, while CFC60 Kevin Mital caught 11 passes for 234 yards and two touchdowns. Good enough to convince us last week was just a hiccup, and take over the top spot on the rankings – for now.

2. Vieux Montréal Spartiates (3-0)
The Spartiates came to play in 2018. They’re off to a blazing start after another 48-26 win against CNDF, and should be feeling confident heading into a tough game with Vanier. There were a lot of big performances this week, but Alexandre Dagobert stole the show with 14 carries for 107 yards and four touchdowns.

3. Vanier Cheetahs (2-1)
Welcome to the question mark of the week segment. Saint-Jean were ready to ball on Saturday night, and the Cheetahs simply didn’t match their pace on the road. They ended up throwing three dagger interceptions, but one bright spot was Kevin Foster Verdier rushing for 132 yards and a touchdown on 20 carries. They could climb again, but they remain at number three for now and could drop further with another tough game against the Spartiates this weekend.

4. Ch.-Lennoxville Cougars (1-2)
It’s been a rough couple weeks for the defending champions. At this point they could arguably fall below Garneau, but the gold hardware earns them some leeway going into week four. Thomas Bolduc and Charles Giroux did their best to keep up connecting for 151 yards on just eight passes, but the high-powered Phenix offence was too much to handle. They need to have a huge bounce back against Limoilou.

5. Garneau Élans (2-1)
Garneau may be fifth on our rankings, but they’re fourth in the standings and loving life considering how last season ended. The Elans were able to put it all together this week in a 42-5 victory over Lionel-Groulx, which was led by a myriad of players with eight catching passes from Tristan Blais or Charles Goulet, and seven different players registering a carry in the backfield. A lot of weapons on display, and exactly what they’ll need to knock off the top dogs in the conference.

6. Notre-Dame-de-Foy (1-2)
After pulling off a nailbiter against the Faucons, CNDF was sent back to reality by Vieux Montreal in a 48-26 defeat. They hold onto the sixth spot thanks to the promising play of Raphael Latulippe and Vincent Carbonneau , who’ve combined for 360 yards on 25 passes this year. They’ve got Saint-Jean next up, and they can’t afford to slip up after watching Vanier go down this week.

7. Saint-Jean Géants (1-2)
What a week for the Geants. I don’t know if anybody predicted they’d knock off the top ranked Cheetahs, but here we are after they pulled off the 28-13 upset. Their defence was the backbone of this victory with Christophe Beaulieu hauling in a pair of interceptions, and Justin Lauzon adding another. On offence they lived and died by long ball with two lengthy touchdown passes from Ettore Casati to Nathan Lupien and Philippe Rodrigue – then they ran the ball 64 times to help seal the deal.

8. Lévis-Lauzon Faucons (1-2)
We’ve got another team in the win column. Levis-Lauzon finally stuck the landing in their 48-23 victory over Limoilou with a magical performance out of Adrien Guay. When you add it all up, Guay accounted for 404 yards and seven touchdowns between his arm and his legs. The defence wouldn’t leave him out to dry either grabbing four interceptions. There’s only three teams who’ve scored over 100 points this year, and the Faucons are one of them, so never sleep on this offence popping off in any matchup.

9. Lionel-Groulx Nordiques (1-2)
The Nordqiues had a lot of positives from their first two weeks, but they just couldn’t get anything going against a top notch defence in their 42-5 loss versus Garneau. Cedrick Cholette Cabana was their most impressive receiving catching five passes for 62 yards, and Emeric Hamelin led the defence with a sack and 7.5 tackles.

10. Limoilou Titans (0-3)
This was the game the Titans needed to win to get their season on track, but they failed to keep up in a 48-23 loss to Levis-Lauzon. They’ll need to figure out their offensive woes quickly because at the moment Olivier Bamrounsavath is their leading passer, and leading rusher, which generally isn’t a great sign.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
