CFC CEGEP “POWER 5” (7): A new number one team!!

And then there was one. The game of the season took place last weekend as CNDF hosted Champlain-Lennoxville in a battle of the two remaining unbeaten D1 teams. The Cougars left little doubt as they jumped all over the home team, early and often, racing out 17-0 en route to a 24-10 halftime lead. Although CNDF showed signs of life in the third quarter, the game was never in doubt with the Cougars cruising to a 41-25 road win and sole possession of first place. While the Cougars and CNDF traded spots in the weekly Power Rankings, slots three thru five remained unchanged. LΓ©vis-Lauzon, Vieux MontrΓ©al and AndrΓ©-Grasset all won on the weekend to retain their rankings, but keep an eye out for D2 Valleyfield. Le Noir et Or have made quite the successful jump from D3 and are unbeaten through six games. After winning three consecutive D3 crowns Valleyfield made the jump this year and are the team to beat after the first half of the season. Saint-Jean cracked the Power Five this year and Valley looked poised to do the same.

With the season in the stretch run here’s the Week Seven CEGEP POWER 5. All the D1 teams will enjoy a bye week for Thanksgiving, so we will see you in two weeks. Enjoy!

WEEK SEVEN CFC CEGEP POWER 5 (Last week’s β€œPower 5” ranking in parenthesis):

1) CHAMPLAIN-LENNOXVILLE COUGARS (2) 7-0 (won 41-25 @ Notre-Dame-de-Foy)

The Cougars displayed complete dominance in their win over CNDF. Firing on all cylinders, the offense amassed 669 yards, while the D held the top-ranked CNDF offense to only 384 yards. Recent uOttawa commit, QB Mike Arruda showed why he was offensive player of the year in 2014, saving his best performance of the season for the biggest game so far. Arruda completed 27 of 44 for 345 yards, three touchdowns and no picks and if that wasn’t enough he added 51 yards and a touchdown on six carries. Receiver Marc-Antoine Pivin and running back Thomas Bertrand-Hudon also had huge afternoons, with Pivin hauling in eight passes for 162 yards and Bertrand-Hudon going off for 241 yards on 22 carries. With the win the Cougars left no doubt as to who is number one……for now. (Next Up: Montmorency)

2) LE NOTRE DAME DE COLLEGE NOTRE DAME-DE-FOY (CNDF) (1) 6-1 (lost 41-25 vs. Champlain-Lennoxville)

CNDF suffered their first loss of the 2015 campaign and it wasn’t close. Defensively they didn’t seem to have an answer for the Cougars offense and at times seemed completely overmatched in the front seven. Of course CNDF remain among the elite and the bye week should give them a chance to put the game behind them without any lingering effects. Although the loss may have left CNDF with some question marks, they will have a lot to say in the upcoming playoffs and remain a contender for the title. (Next Up: #4 Vieux MontrΓ©al)

3) LES FAUCONS DE LÉVIS-LAUZON (3) 5-2 (won 42-19 vs. Limoilou)

The Faucons defense seems to be hitting their stride as the playoffs near and that’s bad news for the rest of the RSEQ D1. Scoring points hasn’t been an issue for LΓ©vis-Lauzon in 2015; the problem has been stopping their opponents from doing likewise. As we have said before there is plenty of talent on both sides of the ball and if the last few weeks are any indication, the D is coming together. The Faucons defense registered eight sacks holding Limoilou to 105 yards and one interception through the air. DB Jean-Philippe LΓ©vesque was all over the field registering 14 tackles (11 solo. 6 assists) in the 42-19 beat down of Limoilou. LΓ©vis-Lauzon can finish in second if they win out and if the defense continues the stellar play there is no reason that can’t happen. (Next Up: @ Γ‰douard-Montpetit)

4) LES SPARTIATES DU VIEUX MONTRÉAL (5) (4-3) (won 39-10 @ Édouard-Montpetit)

The defending champs need to win their final two games to guarantee themselves a home playoff game in the first round. Easier said than done when your last two games are against #2 CNDF and #1 Champlain-Lennoxville. (Next Up: @ #2 Notre-Dame-de-Foy)

Spartiates Week 3 CEGEP

5) LES PHΓ‰NIX D’ANDRΓ‰ GRASSET (5) (3-4) (won 26-16 vs. Vanier)

With the exception of a 40 yard touchdown run by Samuel Emilus, Grasset completely shutdown Vanier’s offense last weekend picking off Cheetah QBs five times in the process. Louis Cavanaugh and Bruno LegacΓ© led the way with Cavanaugh registering two picks, an interception and a score while LegacΓ© tallied 4.5 tackles, two picks and a score of his own in the win. (Next Up @ Garneau)

HONOURABLE MENTION: VALLEYFIELD (D2)

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
