CFC CEGEP β€œPOWER 5” (FINAL): Cougars complete the perfect season

That’s all she wrote folks!! Hard to believe but it’s all said and done as the sun set on a terrific 2015 football season. With their 43-22 win in the finals, the Champlain-Lennoxville Cougars put the final touches on their perfect season and showed, once again that they were in a league of their own.

Top spot was a no-brainer in the final “Power 5” rankings and CNDF was a solid number two but after that one could spend hours debating. Parity was the name of the game at the division one level, with upsets more the norm than the exception during the season. Coming down to the final weekend of the regular season four teams were competing for the final two playoff spots and home field was still very much up in the air for others.

With AndrΓ©-Grasset enjoying success and Limoilou able to compete, the debate will rage on as to how the top division two teams would do in D1. Should St. Jean be considered over D1 teams for the “Power 5”? How about Valleyfield or Lionel Groulx? Always fun to debate, here are the final “Power 5” Rankings for 2015.Β  Thanks for joining us this year and enjoy the off-season!

FINAL 2015 CFC CEGEP β€œPOWER 5” (Last week’s β€œPower 5” ranking in parenthesis):

1) CHAMPLAIN-LENNOXVILLE COUGARS (1) 11-0 (won Bol d’Or 43-22 vs. CNDF)

Champlain-Lennoxville leave absolutely no doubt as to the number one team in the province. The Cougars looked dominant from wire to wire and have the look of a dynasty, having played in the last three championships and winning two. The Cougars didn’t miss a beat with star running back Ced Joseph’s graduation in 2014 and it’ll be interesting to see how they fare in 2016 with the graduation of Marc-Antoine Pivin and Michael Arruda.

2) LE NOTRE DAME DE COLLEGE NOTRE DAME-DE-FOY (CNDF) (2) 9-3 (lostΒ Bol d’Or 43-22 vs. Champlain) Notre Dame took another step towards their quest for their first division one crown. With another strong recruiting class, will 2016 be the year of Le Notre Dame?

3) LES SPARTIATES DU VIEUX MONTRÉAL (3) 6-5 (lost semfinals 46-10 @ CNDF)

Vieux MontrΓ©al will be looking to bounce back in 2016. Although they advanced to this year’s semis, this is a program which measures success by championships, not playoff appearances.

4) LES PHΓ‰NIX D’ANDRΓ‰ GRASSET (4) 5-5 (lost quarterfinal 21-19 @ Vieux MontrΓ©al)

If Grasset can improve their offensive front in 2016….look out. The PhΓ©nix defense was among the best in division one and with a solid nucleus returning for 2016, the future looks bright.

5) LES GΓ‰ANTS DE SAINT-JEAN-SUR-RICHELIEU (NR) 10-1 (won D2 Bol D’Or 42-23 vs. Lionel Groulx)

Les GΓ©ants successfully defended their division two crown and are clearly the class of D2. Let the debate begin as to whether LΓ©vis-Lauzon or Saint-Jean deserve to be the fifth ranked team. Who would win….
