CFC ‘top 10’ Ontario Summer rankings: Varsity & Junior Varsity (Week 6) “Soo = Pick 6”

Here is CFCs ranking of the top 10 Varsity & Junior Varsity teams in Ontario summer football. The two leagues that are eligible for this ranking are the Ontario Varsity Football League (OVFL) & the Ontario Football Conference (OFC). These two leagues do not play against one another during the regular or playoff seasons.

A few changes have occurred in the ‘TOP 10’, as a result of week 6 game results and play.

VARSITY (Under 20)

1. (1) Essex Ravens (OVFL) – [5-0]

Had a bye this week. Host the undermanned Guelph Bears this Saturday at 8pm.

2. (2) Burlington Stampeders (OFC) – [6-0]

The Stampeders defeated former OVFL squad the Huronia Stallions 59 to 14. Will have to win this weekend without the services of QB Will Finch who will be trying to lead Team Ontario-West past Nova Scotia on Saturday in Lethbridge. Play the Hamilton Wentworth Panthers which is always a close game with the cross town rivals.

3. (4) Ottawa Myers Riders (OVFL) – [5-0]

Had the bye but moved up one spot based on Hamilton loss. Host the Etobicoke Eagles this weekend, looking to avenge last years playoff loss to the Eagles.

4. (6) Sault Ste. Marie Sabercats (OVFL) – [4-1]

As they did last season, defeated the Hamiilton Ironmen in regular season play. The 39 to 12 final was impressive considering the size advantage that Hamilton has on the Sabercats. The only Ironmen touchdown came in the final seconds. Secondary leads the OVFL with 11 interceptions. The defense has led the way, and Ian Hutchinson has been the best player on that defense, returning another INT for a ‘pick 6’ this weekend. The secondary better be at their best when they play Blake Huggins and the league leading passing attack of London this weekend.

5. (3) Hamilton Ironmen (OVFL) – [5-1]

Lost to the Sault Ste Marie Sabercats 39 to 12 on the weekend. David Hazell had over 240 yards rushing on 39 carries but the lack of a pass game really hurt the Ironmen…and the 6 interceptions, 3 of which turned into ‘pick 6’s’. Hope to rebound against Brampton this week.

6. (5) Ottawa Cumberland Panthers (OVFL) – [4-1]

Had the bye this weekend. Host the Metro Toronto Wildcats which should go a long way in determining playoff standings in the OVFL east.

7. (8) Twin Cities Predators (OFC) – [5-1]

Correction: We originally erroneously reported a victory of the Toronto Jr. Argos but the Predators defeated the Forest City Thunderbirds 56 to 0. Karsten Beney (Laurier commit) went off for 3 touchdowns in the game. The Predators had 526 yards of total offense.

8. (7) Toronto Thunder (OVFL) – [3-2*]

Had the bye this weekend. Play the Kingston Grenadiers which should be a very intriguing match up.

9. (9) Metro Toronto Wildcats – [3-2]

Had a bye this weekend. Travel to Ottawa to play the Cumberland Panthers.

10. (10) Kingston Grenadiers – [3-2]

Had the bye this weekend. Look to solidify a playoff spot with a victory over the Toronto Thunder this Saturday.

Honourable Mentions:
Brampton Bulldogs (OVFL), Niagara Spears (OVFL), London Falcons (OVFL)

Special Honourable mention to the Cornwall Wildcats who won their 2nd franchise victory over Guelph; their first on the road.

* Toronto Thunder defeated Etobicoke Eagles in week 1 action in overtime 36 to 30 but the game was forfeited due to ‘ineligible player participation’ – Etobicoke is awarded a 20 to 0 victory

JUNIOR VARSITY (U17)

1. (1) Ottawa Myers Riders (OVFL) – [5-0]

Had the bye this week. Host the Etobicoke Eagles Saturday.

2. (2) Burlington Stampeders (OFC) – [6-0]

The first ‘big test’ against Huronia was not the case as the Stampeders rolled to a 66 to 6 victory over the Barrie team. Play the Stallions again this weekend and expect a similar result.

3. (3) Hamilton Ironmen (OVFL) – [5-0]

Had a bye this weekend. Travel to Brampton to play the Bulldogs this Saturday.

4. (4) Niagara Spears (OVFL) – [4-1]

Had a bye this weekend. Host the Cambridge Lions which will be the game of the week.

5. (5) Mississauga Warriors (OVFL) – [4-1]

Had a bye this weekend. Host the Halton Cowboys.

6. (6) Cambridge Lions (OVFL) – [5-1]

Looked impressive against the Brantford Bisons on the weekend. Will be without the services of middle linebacker Drew Walden and QB James Roberts this weekend as they represent their province at the Football Canada Cup. It should not slow down this team which will travel to Niagara to play a much anticipated game.

7. (HM) Kingston Grenadiers (OVFL) – [3-2]

Defeated Pickering Dolphins 17 to 9. Travel to Toronto this weekend (corrected unreported score).

8. (8) Oshawa Hawkeyes (OVFL) – [4-2]

Defeated Etobicoke in a ‘shootout’ 55 to 34. Host the London Falcons in an interesting cross conference match up.

9. (10) Toronto Thunder (OVFL) – [3-2]

Had a bye this weekend. Host the Kingston Grenadiers this weekend.

10. (HM) Essex Ravens (OVFL) – [3-2]

Had the bye this weekend. Host the Guelph Bears this weekend.

Honourable Mention:
Pickering Dolphins (OVFL), Guelph Bears (OVFL)

NOTES:
a) teams eligible for ranking play in the OVFL or OFC
b) Contributors to the ranking include CFC reporters, CIS coaches, OVFL & OFC scouts – the pre-season team of contributors totaled 15 individuals…which we anticipate to grow during the course of the season
c) the only rule difference between the two leagues is that the Varsity OFC division plays 3-downs where all others play 4-downs
d) We will rank the ‘top 10’ up until and including the final regular season weekend
e) Have fun
