#CFC10 PREVIEWS & PREDICTIONS (8): Burlington, Niagara host key contests

With only a couple of weeks until the postseason begins in both the Ontario Varsity Football League (OVFL) and Ontario Football Conference (OFC), this week’s games are very important when it comes to homefield advantage and seedings for the postseason.

Also, with players missing from rosters, it provides an added element of intrigue and drama.

Here are a few games to watch for this weekend in both leagues:

Dominic Mandalfino

ONTARIO FOOTBALL CONFERENCE (OFC):

HAMILTON VARSITY TIGER CATS @ BURLINGTON STAMPEDERS (SUNDAY JULY 10TH @ NELSON FIELD, 5:00PM):

In a key South Division battle, two undefeated teams and rivals will square off on Sunday evening in Burlington.

The Hamilton Varsity Tiger Cats come into this contest a little less tested as last week, the team won their game against Vaughan Rebels by forfeit as their opponents did not have the numbers to field a team.

#CFC100 Connor Carusello leads the offensive charge for the Tiger Cats.  He will try to connect with Nicholas Petermann, Jacob Patten Bothelo and Damian Tesoro.  Patten Bothelo plays a prominent role on special teams as he leads the OFC in kicking points.

On defence, Mitchell Garland anchors the Ticats unit.

For the Stampeders, #CFC100 Dominic Mandalfino has been on a season tear.  So far in five games, he has amassed 574 yards on 61 carries and scored 12 touchdowns and is the leading league rusher.

In addition to Mandalfino, Nathan Haye, Raymar Lloyd and Nicholas Mardner will be viable targets for pivot Mason Brown to create offensive magic with on the field.

Week 5 Player of the Week Jack Miller highlights the Stampeders defence.

This game will involve two highly charged offensives and very stingy defences.  While the Stampeders have the most points this season (234), the Varsity Tiger Cats have given up the least points (13).  It comes down to which team capitalizes on errors and opportunities.

Even though this could be a high scoring affair, this one is too close to call.

ONTARIO VARSITY FOOTBALL LEAGUE (OVFL):

LONDON JR. MUSTANGS @ NIAGARA SPEARS (SATURDAY JULY 9TH @ KIWANIS FIELD, 8:00PM):

On Saturday night, another rivalry gets reignited in Niagara as two of the top teams in the Adam Conference go to battle.

With only one more game after this contest remaining, the London Jr. Mustangs are hoping to give the undefeated Niagara Spears their first loss of the season to round out their season (NOTE – the Spears have a bye in the last week of the regular season so this is their last game before the playoffs).

However, the Jr. Mustangs will be without their head coach as Tom Flaxman is with Team Ontario for the Football Canada Cup in Manitoba.  Can the troops rally without him?

For one thing, the Jr. Mustangs defence have to stop quarterback Tre Ford and leading receiver Jordan Terrio from creating any sort of offensive magic in the game.  Ford is the league’s leading quarterback with 95 completions in 140 attempts for 1810 yards and 24 touchdowns.  Terrio leads the league in receiving with 731 yards on 35 yards and nine touchdowns.

Offensively, Jake Pow and Brentyne AndersonBrown lead the way but they have to get past a tough Spears defence that is highlighted by Jack Andrews and Tyrell Ford.

Overall, the Jr. Mustangs are jockeying for either a bye or a good playoff position but the Spears will be too much for them to handle on Saturday night.

ONTARIO VARSITY FOOTBALL LEAGUE (OVFL):

LONDON JR. MUSTANGS @ NIAGARA SPEARS (SATURDAY JULY 9TH @ KIWANIS FIELD,FRIDAY JULY 8TH, 7:30PM):

Niagara will be the scene of a significant Adam Conference matchup under Friday Night Lights.

The Spears hope to give the undefeated Jr. Mustangs their first loss of the season.

However, both teams will be missing significant players on their rosters due to the Football Canada Cup which starts in Winnipeg this weekend.

Despite that, we are predicting the visiting team will leave Niagara with the win but it will be a tight one.

PREDICTION: London Jr. Mustangs 32, Niagara Spears 28
