#CFC10 SUMMER RANKINGS – VARSITY (13): Second to last rankings, who is number 1?

Only one week left. Yup, hard to believe but this time next week the 2015 Ontario Summer Season becomes a part of history. The curtains dropped on the OFC’s season last weekend with Guelph University’s Alumni stadium serving as the host for Championship Weekend. The Varsity level saw a much anticipated battle between Toronto and Burlington and when it was all said and done, the Burlington Stampeders were OFC Champs and found themselves back in the #CFC10 top 3. In a game that was closer than the score would indicate Burlington scored 17 unanswered second half points to take the crown 25-7.

One can’t blame OVFL fans for feeling a sense of deja vu, the Myers Riders and Kingston Grenadiers met for a rematch of the 2014 Wettges final and for the second year in a row Myers advanced and once again will face the Essex Ravens for the OVFL crown. Same as last season. Myers comes in unbeaten, while the Ravens haven’t lost since an opening day defeat to the Niagara Spears, again just like last year……

With only one week left the final #CFC10 Summer Rankings are taking shape but with #1 vs. #2 this weekend, top spot is yet to be decided. How did last weekend’s results affect the #CFC10? Here we go with the second to last #CFC10 Summer Rankings for 2015.

VARSITY (UNDER 20) TOP TEN RANKINGS – WEEK 13 (previous week’s ranking in parenthesis)

1) OTTAWA MYERS RIDERS (1) 8-0 (2-0) OVFLΒ (won Wettges Conference final 48-21 vs. Kingston) Myers will try to complete the trifecta this weekend after knocking off Kingston in last weekend’s conference final. QB Jacob Spinella went off hitting 28 of 38 for 350 yards and SIX TD strikes. All that stands between Myers and a three-peat are the Essex Ravens, the same squad Myers beat by a rouge to capture their second straight title in 2014.Β  Next up: #2 Essex (OVFL CHAMPIONSHIPS)

2) ESSEX RAVENS (2) 7-1Β (2-0) OVFL – (won Adam Conference final 21-17 vs. London) The defending Adam Conference Champs looked good in their four point win over #4 London. DB Matthew Marentette led the defense with 12 total tackles (9 solo, 6 assists). DL Lowhya Lako contributed to the cause on defense as well with two sacks. The Ravens now get a shot of redemption in a rematch with Myers for all the marbles.Β  Next up: #1 Myers (OVFL CHAMPIONSHIPS)

3) BURLINGTON STAMPEDERS (5) 6-2 (3-0) OFC – (won OFC Championship 25-7 vs. Toronto Jr. Argos) After starting 6-0 the Stamps closed the season with back to back tight losses, losing by seven to Guelph and only two to Hamilton. Any questions about the psychological toll of the losses were answered in round one with the Stamps dispatching the defending champs, Hamilton 33-23. The next week the Stamps followed up with an even more impressive performance knocking off Guelph 42-21 and finally knocking off Toronto last weekend for the Stamps first crown since 2010. Running back Jordan Lyons rushed for 160 yards on only 11 carries in the win. Β  2015 OFC VARSITY CHAMPS

4) LONDON JR MUSTANGS (4) 6-2Β (2-1) OVFL – (lost Adam Conference final 21-17 @ Essex) Cole Kussman’s 219 yards rushing weren’t enough as Essex shut down the London passing game and kept running back Brentyne Andersonbrowne in check.

5) GUELPH JR. GRYPHONS (6) 7-1Β (1-1) OFC –Β (season finished) Lost OFC South Final 42-21 vs. Burlington

6) HAMILTON HURRICANES (7) 7-1 (0-1)Β  OFC – (season finished) – Lost in OFC South Semifinal 33-23 vs. Burlington.

7) TORONTO JR. ARGOS (4) 8-0 (2-1) OFC – (lostΒ OFC Championship 25-7 vs. Burlington) Toronto trailed 8-7 at the half on the strength of an Esson Hamilton to Shareef Johnson 64 yard touchdown strike. Unfortunately the Jr. Argos couldn’t muster anything in the second half, falling 25-7 to Burlington. The loss however shouldn’t tarnish a fantastic run by the Jr. Argos, who unfortunately fall a little short. OFC NORTH CHAMPS

8) NIAGARA SPEARS (9) 6-2Β (0-1) OVFL –Β (season finished) Lost second round 38-21 vs. #4 London

9) KINGSTON GRENADIERS (8) 6-2Β (1-1) OVFL – (lost Wettges Conference final 48-21 @ #1 Myers) For the second consecutive season the Grens road ends in the nation’s capital.Β  Kingston was a game opponent with QB Dylan Fisher passing for 308 yards and 3 TDs all to Carter Matheson, who himself hauled in 12 passes for 193 yards.

10) CAMBRIDGE LIONS (NR) 6-2 (1-1) OVFL –Β (season finished) Lost second round 45-20 @ #2 Essex.

***Honourable Mention***Β  PETERBOROUGH WOLVERINES (OFC), DURHAM WEST DOLPHINS (OVFL)
