CFC25 Small School RANKINGS: Holy Cross go back-to-back while Holy Trinity Academy fights back

TOP HEADLINES

  • They came. They saw. They dominated. The Holy Cross Hurricanes are back-to-back OFSAA champions after scorching the turf in their 36-0 blowout victory over Chaminade College in the Eastern Bowl. The win caps off another perfect season for the boys from Peterborough, who have now extended their winning streak to 16 straight games going back to last year, and have forever etched themselves in the history books as the greatest group to ever dawn the green and black at Holy Cross.

  • It unfortunately wasn’t the ending everyone was dreaming about at Confederation, who fought till the very end in their 28-21 loss to CFC50 46th ranked Elmira in the OFSAA Independent Bowl. Regardless of how the last two games ended, the Chargers should have nothing but pride about the campaign they put together in Sudbury winning their first city title since 2003, and setting the new standard for future teams to follow in their footsteps.

  • Austin O’Brien always have a flair for the late season dramatics, but there was nothing dramatic about their 45-0 thrashing of Hunting Hills to book their spot in the Tier II Alberta provincial finals. Holy Trinity Academy on the other hand went for a more theatrical approach to their semifinals showdown with Cochrane. It was all Cobras in the first half as they built a decisive 17-3 lead going into halftime, but the Knights halftime speech must’ve been an all-timer because the defending champs woke up with a vengeance outscoring Cochrane 42-3 in the final two quarters to secure their sixth visit to the Tier II championship in the last seven years. The stage is now set for another meeting between Austin O’Brien and Holy Trinity Academy, who have gone to battle three times before in the Tier II finals in 2011, 2019 and 2022. The Knights have won the last two contests in decisive fashion, but there’s something special brewing in the Austin O’Brien locker room, who entered the Tier II playdowns as the 10th seed. But after two blowout victories by the Crusaders against allegedly better teams, Holy Trinity Academy know their path to back-to-back provincial championships is going to be a lot harder in reality than it looks on paper. Lastly we don’t want this make this sound like an afterthought, but of course Holy Rosary prevailed 44-15 over St. Paul in the Tier III semifinals. They’ve now made it to 10 straight provincial championship games, and are looking to bring home their fourth straight banner against Cardston.

CFC100 CLASS 2026 RANKINGS

  • We wrap-up this week in the same place we’ll put on a bow on the high school season in Canada with an update from British Columbia. Four teams travelled to BC Place last weekend with starry eyes of provincial glory, but only Vernon and Argyle left with their dreams intact. Vernon did what Vernon does putting together another dominant 45-7 performance against Mount Douglas to lockdown their sixth appearance in the AA finals in the last eight seasons. On the other side of the bracket, Argyle had to work a lot harder to punch their ticket to the finals against a scrappy South Kamloops squad who gave the Pipers everything they could handle before falling 29-22. It’ll be a tale of two very different programs with Vernon being the perennial favourites looking to win fourth provincial banner, and Argyle looking to do what no other team have done before making their first appearance in the AA finals in school history. Will experience be the difference maker for the Panthers? Or will ignorance truly be bliss for the Pipers?
