#CFC50 game preview (MB): No. 20 Vincent Massey Trojans collide with the Dakota Lancers

This Friday night the #CFC50 No. 20 Vincent Massey Trojans (1-1)  and  Dakota Lancers (0-2) will collide at Investors Group Field. The WHSFL along with the United Way and Winnipeg Blue Bombers have given the kids an opportunity to play at the beautiful stadium this weekend with the 5$ gate fee going to United Way.

In their last contest the Trojans took it to the Garden City Gophers 55-0, and the Lancers were defeated by the Sturgeon Heights Huskies 39-16.

“It was really exciting that all of our players played, and contributed, to our victory last week,” mentioned Coach McKay. “It was really exciting to see how many of our young players have improved since the beginning of the season.” One stand out on the Trojans offense was Quinn Adolfson. Adolfson had a big game passing for over 100 yards with a touchdown, rushed for over 100 yards and scored a rushing touchdown.

Two areas that Vincent Massey would like to improve are being more consistent in their rushing game, and their special teams cover units. Place kicker Taj Moryl was huge for Massey going 3-3 on field goals, and 4-4 on converts.

On a team with so many skilled players like the Trojans, I asked coach which players may get overlooked sometimes. He responded, “Our offensive tackles, Josh Diamond & Tong King, both Team Captains, get often overlooked by the success and reputation of our skill players. They are such unselfish, high character young men, ‘true’ team players.”

On their quest to earn back to back championships the Vincent Massey Trojans will meet a young Lancers team in week 3. “Dakota is a younger team, but wow, what an improvement from week 1 to week 2,” said McKay. “Also, their young QB, Reid Vankoughnett, is a gunslinger, and is very capable of throwing a TD on any given play.” Vankoughnett takes the reigns from last year’s starter Colby Kyliuk who is now a Manitoba Bison, along with former running back Somto Anyadike.

Connor Kyliuk

The Dakota Lancers are fortunate to have Connor Kyliuk on the offensive and defensive line. Kyliuk was just named #CFC100 top prospects list in Canada. McKay said of Kyliuk, “They have one of the best players in the province in OL/DL Connor Kyliuk, anchoring their lines.”

We at CFC think that the Vincent Massey Trojans will defeat the Dakota Lancers. Kickoff is Friday at 7:30 p.m at Investors Group Field.
