UPDATED: #CFC50 Playoff games (West/Atlantic) PREVIEW [1]: Davids vs. Goliaths

We will be previewing the #CFC50 Games of the Week for the West and Atlantic regions. While this will be generally geared towards the #CFC50 ranked teams, we want to hear from you if there are great rivalry games or exciting matchups, regardless of tier or division, that we aren’t aware of. Send us a ‘heads up’ by Tuesday each week and we’ll see what we can do: [email protected].

*Note: Some information was not available at press time. It will be added as it becomes available.

Early playoff matchups generally see powerhouses who dominated their in-conference opponents all year long, generally playing against teams that have struggled all year long. These David and Goliath matchups generally don’t end very well unless Cinderella is in the building. Many of the games we are about to preview, Cinderella is not in the building. You will see several lopsided blowouts as provincial powerhouses will dominate from the opening kickoff to the final whistle.

….and now let’s get to it with this week’s #CFC50 Playoff Game PREVIEWS

No. 2 Bev Facey Falcons (8-0, 2-0)
Salisbury Sabres (0-2-6)
Saturday, Nov. 5 @ 1:00pm, Emerald Hills (quarter-final)
According to the Football Alberta website, the #1 seed (Bev Facey) is set to play the #6 seed (Salisbury). We have yet to see the Carr division playoff bracket up on the Metro athletics website, so we are hoping that this is indeed the case. This is a true case of David vs. Goliath. Salisbury lost to Bev Facey 36-3 in the regular season. That result may even be more lopsided in this playoff re-match as the Falcons are firing on all cylinders and Salisbury has struggled through one of their worst seasons in recent history.

No. 5 Leboldus Golden Suns (7-0, 1-0)
No. 39 Riffel Royals (5-2)
Friday, Nov. 4 @ 6:00pm, Mosaic Stadium (Schwann Conference Final)
Leboldus and Riffel will meet for the third time this season to finally put the baby to bed! We’ve got the Golden Suns who are looking to finish the season in perfect fashion and then we’ve got a hungry Riffel team that will hopefully be carried to the promised land by #CFC100 Kyle Borsa. Either way, we think both teams are highly capable of becoming the Schwann Conference Champions. This will be the game to watch this weekend.

st-pauls-1-1095x567

No. 7 St. Paul’s Crusaders (6-0, 1-0)
Sturgeon Heights Collegiate Huskies (4-3)
Anavet Bowl – Friday Nov. 7 @ 7:30pm, IG Field (semi-final)
Until St. Paul’s meets Vincent Massey, they will keep steamrolling opponents. Sturgeon will be no different as they lost to the Crusaders in regular season play 50-7.

No. 9 Henry Wise Wood Warriors (6-0, 0-1)
Pool B – first round bye. Will play on Nov. 7 @ 7:00pm, Shouldice Hellard (semi-final)

No. 12 St. Francis Browns (5-1, 1-0)
Pool A – first round bye, Will play on Nov. 7 @ 5:00pm, Shouldice Hellard (semi-final)

No. 14 Vincent Massey Trojans (7-1, 1-0)
Murdoch MacKay Clansmen (4-3)
Anavet Bowl – Friday, Nov. 4 @ 5:00pm, IG Field (semi-final)
This game could be a little closer and there could be a little more hope for the Clansmen as they only lost 51-17 to the Trojans in regular season play. As we stated earlier, Vincent Massey just needs to meet up with St. Paul’s and then we’ll get a ball game.

No. 24 Centennial Chargers (7-0)
No. 43 Holy Cross Crusaders (5-1, 1-0)
Friday, Nov. 4 @ 7:00pm, SMF Field (4A City Final)
The Centennial-Holy Cross matchup was one of the more competitive high school football games in Saskatchewan during the regular season. Centennial took that one 25-20 as both teams fought hard for bragging rights. We knew they would meet again in the playoff final and here we are. The Chargers vs. the Crusaders. Both teams are hungry for the win and have prepped for this meeting. We, at CFC, believe that Matthew Baraniuk will once again be the difference in the game as he dominated the regular season contest as he churned out 135 yards rushing which turned out to be the deciding factor in Centennial’s victory.

No. 27 L.C.I. Rams (5-0, 2-2)
Raymond Comets
Thursday, Nov. 3 @ 7:00pm, University of Lethbridge (semi-final)
The Rams will go against the Raymond Comets on Thursday night in Lethbridge. The Rams beat the Comets during the regular season behind the efforts of the electrifying Tanner Sudo who rushed for 249 yards that day on 20 carries and also scored 3 touchdowns. If this happens again, the Comets will disappear into a black hole called the Tanner Sudo show.

centennial-coyotes-2016-790x362

No. 30 Centennial Coyotes (5-1)
Ernest Manning Griffins (4-2)
Pool B – Wednesday, Nov. 2 @ 7:00pm, Shouldice Hellard (quarter-final)
What could turn out to be the most competitive playoff matchup in week 1, we see a 2 seed take on a 3 seed as Centennial takes on Ernest Manning in the Calgary Div 1 quarter-finals. The Coyotes have been on a bit of a tear through the backend of their schedule and will look to continue that momentum going forward. This game will be a matchup between Baby Brees, Declan O’Flaherty, versus the Ernest Manning front seven. If I was a high school football fan and lived in Calgary, I would make a point of getting out to watch this game.

24 hours and the opening game of year 4 will be underway #youngguns #letsgogetit

No. 31 Tantramar Regional Titans (8-0)
Saint John (3-5)
Saturday, Nov. 5 @ 12:00pm, Tantramar (semi-final)
Tantramar and it’s one headed monster at running back, will take on Saint John who they beat 47-6 in the regular season. It was a close game at the half, but the Titans exploded for 4 touchdowns in the 3rd quarter. The Titans also rushed for 410 yards that day. If Saint John can’t slow down the rushing attack, Tantramar will establish a dominant lead much earlier then they did in the regular season.

No. 37 Cobequid Ed. Centre Cougars (7-1)
CEC will be hosting Lockview in the playoff matchups for Nova Scotia. We have been informed that this year has been highly competitive within the NSSAFFL league with three 7-1 teams and two 6-2 teams (as well as two 5-3 teams and a 4-4 squad). Citadel, SJA, Horton, and Halifax West will all get a first round bye and will look to play the winners of this weekend the following week. Auburn will host CP Allen, Cole Harbour will play Dartmouth, and Sackville will host JLI for games 1-4. In Game 5, Citadel will host the winner of Game 1, SJA will host the winner of game 2, Horton will get the winner of game 3 and Halifax West will host the winner of Game 4.

The Division 1, tier 1 game 9 will be the winner of game 5 vs the winner of game 6, while the Division 2, tier 2 game 10 will be the winner of game 7 vs the winner of game 8. In Division 2 semi-final action, Central Kings will host Millwood, and Northeast Kings will host Avon View.

Harry Ainlay

No. 40 Harry Ainlay Titans (7-1, 1-0)
Jasper Place Rebels (4-4)
Saturday, Nov. 5 @ 1:30, Johnny Bright (quarter-final)
Jasper Place lost to the Titans 40-15 in the regular season. This matchup will be difficult to JP as Harry Ainlay is coming off a devastating defeat against their arch-rival, Bev Facey and will be looking to get back on track as they had into the playoffs. The Titans will need to get back to basics and work out the kinks while JP will be looking to take advantage of the Titans as they are in recovery mode following their only loss of the year.
