#CFC50 PLAYOFF Games (West/Atlantic) PREVIEW [11]: And then there were……

We will be coveringΒ theΒ #CFC50Β PLAYOFF GAMES forΒ the West and Atlantic regions.Β While this will be generally geared towards theΒ #CFC50Β ranked teams, we want to hear from you if there are great rivalry games or exciting matchups, regardless of tier or division, that we aren’t aware of. Send us a ‘heads up’ by Tuesday each week and we’ll see what we can do:Β [email protected].

*Note: Some information was not available at press time.Β It will be added as it becomes available.

Playoffs continue and with it less and less teams will make each week’s preview as they are eliminated. With that, the matchups will be stronger and the consequences greater. A loss will see teams saying bye-bye to this season and looking to mourn, reflect, and move on to preparations for next season. But for now, dreams of hoisting a championship trophy dance in each and every player, coach, parent, and fan above their head. For now, let’s bask in this excitement and anticipation.

….and now let’s get to it with this week’sΒ #CFC50Β PLAYOFF games PREVIEW

No. 2 Bev Facey FalconsΒ (10-0, 1-0) vs. Notre Dame Cougars (6-1)
Saturday, Nov. 19 – 2:30 p.m., Clarke Stadium (Edmonton)
We’re used to having a school named Notre Dame go deep into Provincial play, but their address is usually from Calgary. This bunch comes from Red Deer and they have shattered a 21-year-old glass ceiling as Central Alberta’s first Tier I sized school to advance out of the first round of playoffs since Lindsay Thurber in 1995. And this is no accident either as they handled the powerful #4 Harry Ainlay Titans this past Saturday in style with a 27-8 victory. Their reward for all of this? A date with the #1 ranked team in Alberta, the Bev Facey Falcons. The Falcons put it in cruise control last week coasting to a 38-6 win over the #9 Bellerose Bulldogs and were probably anticipating a return date with the Titans who they defeated 33-0 two weeks ago in their last regular season game. Instead they are facing the great unknown in the Cougars. Still, the Falcons aren’t a one trick pony. Even if you shut down the amazingΒ #CFC100Β Chuba Hubbard (which no one has done yet) you still have to deal with two of Alberta’s best slotbacks in Joshiah Schakel and Jake Withrow and a defence that is one of the best in Canada. Is this as far as Cinderella goes or is there still time before midnight? We’ll find out Saturday. (Recap courtesy – Football Alberta)

No. 8 Terry Fox Ravens (7-0, 0-2) vs. Mt. Douglas Rams (4-3, 3-0)
Saturday, Nov. 19 @ 3pm, BC Place
Last year’s AAA Provincial Champions, the Mt. Douglas Rams, have worked hard to get back to the playoffs as they experienced a plethora of injuries in the regular season that saw them have 3 back to back losses, very uncharacteristic for this powerhouse team. That being said, the team is now healthy and starting QB Gideone Kremler is on the mend and getting stronger each week. Terry Fox is going to have to get down to business for this weekend as they face, probably their first real challenge of the year.Β #CFC100 Jeremie Kankolongo (aka. Kanks) and potential provincial MVP will be barreling down on the Rams like nobody’s business. Kanks will be leading this team to the very end. But the Ravens still have that loss to the Rams in the playoffs last year when they were knocked out by them. They will want to rectify that and extend the courtesy back. Will we see the Rams repeat history or will Terry Fox pull up their boots straps and get the job done this year.

No. 10 St. Francis Browns vs. No. 22 Raymond Comets
Saturday, Nov. 19 – 1:00 p.m., Comet Stadium (Raymond)
That these two teams are in the Southern Final is nothing new. Both the Browns and Comets have been the most consistent participants in this event since 2000. What will be different this year is the venue. Brand new Comet Stadium in Raymond is a fitting testament to Alberta’s Home of Friday Night Lights and a brutal place to play for any opponent as the locals come out in droves and bring a Texas-style fervour for high school football that you won’t find anywhere else in the Province. Just ask the #2 ranked Henry Wise Wood Warriors who ran into that passion last Saturday and were upset 26-16 by the home town Comets. The Browns come in as defending Tier I Provincial Champions and have a laundry list of Team Alberta and even Team Canada grade players, most notably linebacker #CFC100 Joe Dutton and slotbackΒ #CFC100Β Jacob Izquierdo, and have a passionate fan base of their own, but will have to have all hands on deck this upcoming Saturday as they are headed into choppy waters to say the least. Wouldn’t be late for this kick-off if I wanted to find a seat on Saturday.Β (Recap courtesy – Football Alberta)

No. 20 Notre Dame JugglersΒ (5-1, 2-1) vs. No. 30 Vancouver College Fighting Irish (4-3, 2-1)
Saturday, Nov. 19 @ 8pm, BC Place
The Western conference champions, the Notre Dame Jugglers, have had a storybook season and are looking to close this chapter while holding the AAA provincial championship trophy above their heads. But before they can do that, they will have to get by their traditional rival, the Vancouver College Fighting Irish. The Irish lost in the provincial finals last year to Mt. Douglas and will also be looking to make it to the promise land. VC has struggled as of late andΒ will have to play clean and finish each and every play. Michael Le seems to have found his second gear as he had an incredible game last week against STM and the Irish will need his wheels to keep on spinning in this game. But they will have to contend withΒ #CFC100 QB Steve Moretto, and potential provincial all-star, who has led his team all year with incredible performances each week. Just looking at his stats for the year, we understand how dangerous he really is on both sides of the ball, something that the Irish will have their hands full to contain Saturday night. We are pumped to watch this game and think it’s the one to pay attention to out of the 4 AAA playoff games this weekend.

No. 25 South Delta Sun Devils (5-2, 2-0) vs. Centennial Centaurs (6-2)
Saturday, Nov. 19 @ 12:30pm, BC Place
WillΒ #CFC100 LB Grant McDonald continue his down and dirty playoff dance and destroy any offense that Centennial even thought about bringing? This game will be all about Centennial trying to keep up with the Sun Devils. Will South Delta’s offense continue to explode this week as they have been firing on all cylinders for the past month? Can anybody stop the Sun Devils QB, Ben Calvert, who’s throwing and running and scoring touchdowns from all over the field, and let’s not forget about Grant McDonald who is imposing his will both offensively and defensively. For the Centaurs, canΒ #CFC100 DB Keon Fuoco make enough big plays from free safety to keep the Centennial in the game. He will have to create a little magic in order for his team to compete with the red hot South Delta Sun Devils.

#10 Sammy Sidhu, Hyacks

#10 Sammy Sidhu, Hyacks

No. 28 New Westminster Hyacks (5-2, 2-1) vs. Abbotsford Panthers(4-0)
Saturday, Nov. 19 @ 5:30pm, BC Place
Both the Hyacks and the Panthers enter this game after convincing wins in the 1st round of the playoffs. The Abbotsford Panthers are undefeated after a quick transition to AAA in the Pacific Conference. New West has two losses to their name coming out of the highly competitive Western conference. The Hyack’s Wing T offense will have to be contained by the Panther’s defense. However, Abby has a few weapons that will through the wrench into the Hyacks plans for victory in RB Samwel Uko who had 380 yards rushing against Lord Tweedsmuir last week. Uko is probably one of the more explosive running backs in the province this year. He’s flown under the radar up to this point, but boy do we have him on our radar now. Don’t be surprised if he makes it on theΒ #CFC100 list 2018. Abby, on the other hand, will have to matchup against New West’s offensive and defensive lines the likes of which Abbotsford will not have seen all season long.Β #CFC100s Prento Durigon and Connor Pattison will anchor the Hyacks defense and will have to be up to the challenge of stopping Uko in his tracks. This will also be a good game to watch this weekend, one where we are sitting on the fence as to who will be winner.

No. 39 Citadel Phoenix (8-1) vs. Sir John A Flames (8-1)
Sunday, Nov. 20 @ 1pm
This is what every regular season comes down to; winning a championship. Both the Phoenix and the Flames will be dreaming of becoming the NSSAF Tier 1 Champion come Sunday afternoon. If we look back on the regular season, Citadel beat SJA, 31-7. The Flames will want to get that one back and will be highly motivated to down the Phoenix in this rematch. They will have to have RB, Adam Bennett, have his best performance yet. He has been having an incredible year with 1185 all-purpose yards and 21 rushing touchdowns in the regular season. Citadel will have to contend with this explosive player and the rest of the SJA’s offensive unit that have gelled quite nicely and peaked at the right time. The Phoenix is no doormat, though, as their long tradition of being number 1 in Nova Scotia is no joke. They will have to establish dominance up front from kickoff to the final whistle and contain SJA’s mobile quarterback, Chris Duplisea. Citadel’s QB Monecko Clayton and running back, Jack Campbell, will also have to have the game of their lives in order to win back-to-back championships. This should be a highly competitive game with lots of offense and lots of defense. There will be no shortage of action, that’s to be sure.
