We will be covering the #CFC50 PLAYOFF GAMES for the West and Atlantic regions. While this will be generally geared towards the #CFC50 ranked teams, we want to hear from you if there are great rivalry games or exciting matchups, regardless of tier or division, that we aren’t aware of. Send us a ‘heads up’ by Tuesday each week and we’ll see what we can do: [email protected].

*Note: Some information was not available at press time. It will be added as it becomes available.

….and now let’s get to it with this week’s #CFC50 PLAYOFF games PREVIEW

No. 2 Bev Facey Falcons (11-0, 2-0) vs. No. 9 St. Francis Browns (8-1, 1-0)
Sat., Nov. 26 – 6:00 p.m., Hellard Field at Shouldice Park (Calgary) (game preview courtesy: Football Alberta)
Well this is awkward. The current #1 ranked team in the Province vs. the team that held that designation at the beginning and for most of the season. The good news is that both teams now have a chance to solidify that claim on the field this Saturday. It will be interesting to see how both teams respond as they have taken very different paths to this point. The Falcons have cruised to this point. The only time they have trailed this season was during the first quarter in the North Final vs. Red Deer’s Notre Dame. And it wasn’t for long as they rang up a similar margin of victory as they have against all comers with no one coming within three TD’s of them by games end – including four teams ranked in the Top 10. The Browns on the other hand were cruising along at a similar pace until Oct. 21 when they were upset by the Henry Wise Wood Warriors 28-16. Since then they’ve been in dogfights, including last Saturday’s come from behind win over the Raymond Comets where they trailed 18-13 going into the fourth quarter before pulling it out 29-18.

Another interesting point in this game is fate of #CFC100 Chuba Hubbard. The star tailback for the Falcons, and future Oklahoma State Cowboy, now sits with 2,095 yards and 24 TD’s rushing on the season. This is amazing in itself, but despite all the success he is missing one thing on his resume – a Provincial Championship. Despite being an overwhelming force since Pee-Wee he has always run into a brick wall at Provincial Finals. In 2013 while a Pee-Wee, despite scoring 8 TD’s in the Provincial Final, his Sherwood Park Sabrecats still dropped the game 78-60 to the Calgary Cowboys. Two years later in a lower scoring affair, Chuba’s Sherwood Park Rams lost the Provincial Bantam Final to…(wait for it)…the bantam version of the Calgary Cowboys 25-16. Take a wild guess where most of those Calgary Cowboys wound up going to high school? Yes, Chuba has seen the names #CFC100 Joe Dutton, #CFC100 Jacob Izquierdo, etc. before, and while the Browns player’s shelves are dripping with Provincial Title gold medals, Chuba, and a lot of his team mates have a similar haul – but all silver thanks to the core of St. Francis’s players. Is this the year the Sherwood Park core finally breaks through the Cowboys/Browns wall, or will the traditional laden Browns powerhouse complete the sweep? We’ll find out Saturday.

No. 7 Terry Fox Ravens (8-0, 0-2) vs. No. 23 South Delta Sun Devils (6-2, 2-0)
Saturday, Nov. 26 @ 5pm, BC Place
South Delta completely dominated their quarter-final opponent, Centennial last weekend with a 48-11 win while the Ravens had to battle to get by powerhouse the Mt. Douglas Rams. Terry Fox came out on top of that one, 34-25, but it wasn’t an easy game. Terry Fox was a little banged up coming out of the game, but should be good to go come Saturday evening. One of the key matchups in this semi-final game will be the top running back in the province, #CFC100 Jeremie Kankolongo, versus #CFC100 LB Grant McDonald. This matchup alone is worth the price of admission. Both players have some injury concerns throughout the season, but hopefully they are good to go come Saturday because both are exceptional football players and are the leaders of their team.

No. 18 Notre Dame Jugglers (6-1, 2-1) vs No. 26 New Westminster Hyacks (6-2, 2-1)
Saturday, Nov. 26 @ 5pm, BC Place
The other semi-final game is a re-match from the regular season game which saw the Jugglers trounce the Hyacks, 44-28 in a game that saw New West on the wrong side of some incredible plays. This is where #CFC100 QB Steve Moretto introduced himself to the Hyack defense, running for close to 200 yards on the ground. He looked like the reincarnation of Tim Tebow while at Florida. We’ll see how the Hyacks defense gets a hold him should #CFC100 LB Connor Pattison have anything to say about it. This game will feature Moretto and the Notre Dame power-read run game versus the Hyack’s Wing-T. If you enjoy watching a football game where both teams will run the ball, almost every play, this is the one to watch. This game will be decided by the Jugglers ability to stop the Hyack’s Wing-T or the Hyack’s ability to stop the power-read scheme. Let the best run game win.
