#CFC50 PLAYOFF Games (West/Atlantic) RECAP [1]: Big players move on while the rest look ahead to next season

We will be coveringΒ theΒ #CFC50Β Playoff Games forΒ the West and Atlantic regions.Β While this will be generally geared towards theΒ #CFC50Β ranked teams, we want to hear from you if there are great rivalry games or exciting matchups, regardless of tier or division, that we aren’t aware of. Send us a ‘heads up’ by Tuesday each week and we’ll see what we can do:Β [email protected].

*Note: Some information was not available at press time.Β It will be added as it becomes available.

Early playoff matchups generally see powerhouses who dominated their in-conference opponents all year long, generally playing against teams that have struggled all year long. These David and Goliath matchups generally don’t end very well unless Cinderella is in the building. While Cinderella did not knock, there were more competitive games then not.

….and now let’s get to it with this week’sΒ #CFC50Β Playoff GameΒ RECAP

No. 2 Bev Facey Falcons (9-0, 2-0) 43
Salisbury Sabres (0-2-7) 0
Bev Facey continues to roll. At this point in the season, it’s hard to believe that they are unstoppable. Will Henry Wise Wood or St. Francis be able to defeat them when they finally meet deep in the provincial playoffs. Salisbury was overmatched, but played hard. They are a young football team who will no doubt improve over the next couple of years.

No. 5 Leboldus Golden Suns (8-0, 1-0) 56
No. 39 Riffel Royals (5-3) 17
This would be Leboldus’ 4th City Schwann Conference Championship. The Golden Suns beat their archrival for the third time this year. Riffel was one of the few teams to compete with Leboldus this season and made the #CFC50 list for the first time ever this year. Leboldus goes on to face the Holy Cross Crusaders on the 12th for the 4a 12 Man Provincial Championship.

No. 7 St. Paul’s Crusaders (7-0, 1-0) 46
Sturgeon Heights Collegiate Huskies (4-4) 0
St. Paul’s roll’s over another opponent in the Anavet Bowl semi-final 46-0. They will go on to play Vincent Massey WPG in the Final on Thursday the 10th. This is the game we have all been waiting for.

No. 9 Henry Wise Wood Warriors (6-0, 0-1) 0
No. 41 Notre Dame Pride (5-2, 0-1) 13
In a major upset in Calgary on Monday night for the second semi-final game, the Pride came out the winner over the Warriors, 13-0. From what we can ascertain, Notre Dame was the first to score with a 35 yard field goal heading into the second quarter. At halftime the Pride had added another 3 heading into the break, 6-0. Notre Dame would add a major right before the end of the 3rd quarter going into the fourth to make the score 13-0. Henry Wise Wood did not answer and it would be the end of their great season. We have to make mention that the Warriors did bring down the #CFC50 No. 1 ranked team in Canada in the St. Francis Browns earlier in the season. They have a lot to be proud of.

No. 12 St. Francis Browns (5-1, 1-0) 34
No. 28 Centennial Coyotes (6-1) 10
In the first semi-final game on Monday evening, the Browns prevailed over the Coyotes, 34-10. We will update this story as we get more details.

No. 14 Vincent Massey Trojans (8-1, 1-0) 51
Murdoch MacKay Clansmen (4-4) 2
In this Anavet Bowl semi-final, Vincent Massey prevailed again against the Clansmen, 51-2. As mentioned above, the game we are anxious to get going is the Anavet Bowl final versus St. Paul’s. The best two teams will be meeting in this championship, can VM exact revenge for their one and only loss against the Crusaders.

No. 24 Centennial Chargers (7-1) 10
No. 43 Holy Cross Crusaders (7-1, 1-0) 16
The 4A City Final Champions are the Holy Cross Crusaders. This season was all about these two teams. They each gave each other their only regular season losses and every game was highly competitive. Either of these teams could have held up the trophy at the end of the day, but there can only be one. Either way, the winner gets to face provincial power, Leboldus, in the provincial finals in what will be an extremely tough matchup.

No. 27 L.C.I. Rams (5-1, 2-2) 7
Raymond Comets (5-1, 0-2) 21
In what we thought was going to be a LCI victory, the Comets came out to play and proved us wrong with their win 21-7. In an extremely competitive game, the Comets took a 14-0 lead at the half and it stayed that way until the fourth quarter when LCI scored it’s first touchdown on a 50 yard pass play to #CFC100 Tanner MacLachlan. The Comets quickly answered and re-established their 2-score lead and took the win, avenging a regular season loss to LCI.

That’s another win!!! #7gamesftw #semisbaby #goyotes

No. 30 Centennial Coyotes (6-1) 28
Ernest Manning Griffins (4-3) 10
The little engine the could, known as Declan O’Flaherty, led his team to a 28-10 victory over the Griffins in the Calgary Div 1 quarter-finals. We predicted it would take a special effort from the Centennial offense and they answered the bell as they put up 28 points on a very talented front seven of Ernest Manning. Centennial will be hoping to sustain that momentum going into the semi-final against #CFC50 No. 12 St. Francis Browns who were the No. 1 ranked team until they were upset by Henry Wise Wood.

No. 31 Tantramar Regional Titans (9-0) 41
Saint John Greyhounds (3-6) 0
We are getting a little tired of announcing that Tantramar has blown out yet another opponent, and yet, here we are again. The Titans beat Saint John in the semi-final 41-0. In a season that saw them only have two competitive games, the Titans will face Leo Hayes, who has also had a stellar season and sits at 9-0, in the final where, we hope, it will be a ball game.

No. 37 Cobequid Ed. Centre Cougars (7-1) 42
Lockview 6Β
CEC goes through to round 2 of playoff action with their win over Lockview, 42-6. From what we have learned CEC led 22-0 at the half and had a few great individual performances. Tyler Ball had two special team touchdowns and played lights out on defense. The CEC defense played a solid game as reflected in the score. On offense, QB Pettigrew threw for 107 yards along with one touchdown and Riley Gabriel and RB Matheson both hauled in 2 touchdowns apiece. CEC will go on to meet the Sir John A. MacDonald Flames on Saturday where they will have a much stronger team and will have their work cut out for them.

No. 40 Harry Ainlay Titans (8-1, 1-0) 36
Jasper Place Rebels (4-5) 28
In what turned out to be one of the most competitive games in Alberta this weekend, the Titans battled the Rebels for the quarter-final win. Jasper Place gave Harry Ainlay all it could handle, but in the end, the Titans got back to their winning ways.Β After being down 14-0 early the Titans responded with three touchdowns in a 5 minute span during the 2nd quarter.Β Tadi Siwira, Emmanuel Loggale, Cody Olson and Jaxon Hume all scored for the Titans on offense as did Jonathan Rosery on a 102 yard kickoff return for touchdown. OlsonΒ and Rosery also had interceptions on defense.Β The Titans go on to play Notre Dame (Red Deer) in a Provincial quarter-final on Saturday.
