#CFC50 PLAYOFF games (West/Atlantic) RECAP [11]: When the big dawgs came out to play!

We will be covering the #CFC50 PLAYOFF GAMES for the West and Atlantic regions. While this will be generally geared towards the #CFC50 ranked teams, we want to hear from you if there are great rivalry games or exciting matchups, regardless of tier or division, that we aren’t aware of. Send us a ‘heads up’ by Tuesday each week and we’ll see what we can do: [email protected].

*Note: Some information was not available at press time. It will be added as it becomes available.

Playoffs continue and with it less and less teams will make each week’s preview as they are eliminated. With that, the matchups will be stronger and the consequences greater. A loss will see teams saying bye-bye to this season and looking to mourn, reflect, and move on to preparations for next season. But for now, dreams of hoisting a championship trophy dance in each and every player, coach, parent, and fan above their head. For now, let’s bask in this excitement and anticipation.

….and now let’s get to it with this week’s #CFC50 PLAYOFF games RECAP

No. 2 Bev Facey Falcons (11-0, 1-0) 32
Notre Dame Cougars (6-2) 12
In the North regional semi-final matchup between the Notre Dame Cougars from Red Deer, Alberta and the Bev Facey Falcons, we find that the Falcons have added another notch on the stick with their win, 32-12. From what we can piece together from the Facey’s twitter feed, they were the first to put points on the board. In the second quarter, the score was 7-5 for the Cougars, but that lead doesn’t last long and by the third quarter the score is 32-7 for the Falcons. The fourth quarter looks to have brought some fireworks as chip shots are exchanged between teams. Notre Dame goes to the very end and scores a late fourth quarter touchdown to make the final score 32-13. We are impressed with ND’s effort and ability to keep the score within reason from the powerhouse of the North. Nothing to be ashamed of with this performance.

No. 8 Terry Fox Ravens (8-0, 0-2) 34
Mt. Douglas Rams (4-4, 3-0) 25
Saturday at BC Place Stadium proved to be another epic Varsity battle between Mount Douglas and Terry Fox.  When the dust had settled, the Terry Fox Ravens prevailed by a score of 34 to 25. Terry Fox, once again relied on their run game and pounded the ball most of the game with #CFC100 Jeremie Kankolongo making several big plays. Mt. Doug’s inability to stop Kanks and the running game was the deciding factor in this quarter-final matchup. No doubt an unhealthy QB Gideone Kremler impacted the Ram’s overall performance. The outcome may have been different had Kremler been able to use his feet to extend plays as opposed to just flying it through the air.

The Rams showed immense mental and physical toughness, and pushed Terry Fox (ranked #8 in Canada) right to the end. On the offensive side of the ball,  Josh Lucas proved to be a force once again with 283 all purpose yards.  Josh hauled in 11 catches for 131 yards and 1 touchdown, had 35 yards rushing and 127 yards of kickoff and punt returns including a spectacular 93 yard KOR.  Gideone Kremler completed 12 of 23 passes for 156 yards and 2 touchdowns, while Isaiah Cardilicchia completed 8 of 11 passes for 51 yards.  Hayden Naylor had 5 catches for 34 yards, while Sebastian Hansen hauled in 3 passes for 19 yards.  One of the highlights of the game was Dante Carbone’s spectacular 23 yard touchdown reception. On the ground, Sam Mosky had 5 carries for 36 yards.  Great job by all the JV players competing in this game!  Phil Grohovac had 2 clutch field goals connecting from 24 and 35 yards. On defensive side of the ball, Quinn Jenish and Tyrese Hogue played stellar and led the Rams with 11 tackles each.  Quinn also had a fumble recovery.  Jake Ounsted was outstanding once again and recorded 9 tackles, followed by Josh Lucas with 5 tackles.  Phil Grohovac had a fumble recovery in the game. Every year there can only be one Champion, but the 2016 Varsity Rams are all Champions in my books after the fortitude they displayed on Saturday!  (Game recap provided by Mt. Douglas Rams – HC Mark Townsend)

No. 10 St. Francis Browns (8-1, 1-0) 29
No. 22 Raymond Comets (6-2, 0-2) 18
St. Francis travelled to Raymond with a few key injuries, but they did welcome back into the lineup #CFC100 Jacob Izquierdo who, on top of his receiving duties, also played some running back as starting running back, Ethan Moroz, missed the game due to injury. Raymond proved equal to the match as they held the Browns in check most of the game. The Comet’s quarterback made several plays to keep his team in the game, making several solid throws forcing the Browns to cover the entire field. Defensively, Raymond was outmatched from a size perspective, but their team proved to be solid tacklers and made a number of big plays in the secondary. This unit features a lot of juniors and sophomores and will no doubt be very good next season. The turning point in this game was when Brown’s DB Ryan Kerr, intercepted a Raymond pass in the endzone and returned it to the Comet’s 40 putting St. Francis in a great position to pull ahead in the game. The Brown’s wore down their opponent and in the 4th quarter, with several of the Comets going both ways, they simply wore down and were unable to shut down the run game.

No. 20 Notre Dame Jugglers (6-1, 2-1) 27
No. 30 Vancouver College Fighting Irish (4-4, 2-1) 10
Notre Dame once again leaned on #CFC100 QB Steven Moretto and a power run game to punch their ticket to the semi-final round. Vancouver College was simply not able to get off the field defensively and Notre Dame went on extended drives, milking the clock. Moretto’s two long touchdown runs were the two defining plays of the game. Can anybody stop this kid?

No. 25 South Delta Sun Devils (6-2, 2-0) 48
Centennial Centaurs (6-3) 11
South Delta ran away from the Centennial Centaurs. Unfortunately, the Centaurs were no match for the red hot devils. This game was over by halftime. This was easily the least competitive of all the BC quarter-final games. South Delta will move on to a very tough matchup versus the Terry Fox Ravens in a game that will feature two of the best players in the province in a head to head matchup.

No. 28 New Westminster Hyacks (6-2, 2-1) 44
Abbotsford Panthers(4-1) 35
The heavily favoured Hyacks took on the Abbotsford Panthers who are new to the AAA league this year. In a game where many thought the score wouldn’t be close, the Panthers jumped out to an early lead surprising everyone in the stadium, especially the Hyacks. However, the second half was a completely different ball game as the Hyacks ripped off 30 unanswered points and ran away from the Panthers who only scored 14 points in the second half, 7 of those coming on a broken play. Abbotsford played inspired football, but once the Hyacks stopped with the self-inflicted mistakes, they took control of the game. New West’s ability to run the ball was the deciding factor in this quarter-final game. They will go on to meet the Notre Dame Jugglers for next week’s semi-finals.

No. 39 Citadel Phoenix (9-1) 13
Sir John A Flames (8-2) 9
This East coast championship matchup was a terrific defensive game that came down to the very end. Monecko Layton threw a 10 yard touchdown pass to Matthew Mendes. Jack Campbell and Tyrique Dixon-Bowden combined for 225 yards rushing. Defensively, Jacob Morgan and Thomas Tzagarakis led all tackles with 10 each. Grade 10 kicker, Ben Hadley kicked 2 field goals and an extra point. One field goal was with 1:40 minutes left in the 4th quarter to take the lead. (game recap provided by SJA)
