#CFC50 Playoff game preview (SK): Can the Royals upset the Tartans twice?

This Friday night the 4-2 Riffel Royals will battle the 4-2 Campbell Tartans at Regina’s Mosaic Stadium to start the 4A Schwann 2016 playoffs.

In the first meeting of the two teams, the Riffel Royals upset Campbell 40-26. The Campbell Tartan’s turned the ball over 5 times and had an ineffective pass attack in the first matchup, but ran for over 200 yards. Ryan Hall of the Tartans discussed what he learnt about his opponent. “We knew they had good, strong athletes, but they are also very confident and play hard,” said Hall, “Their coaches are doing a great job putting their athletes in positions to be successful.”

One of the reasons the Tartan’s have had success this year is because they have one of the top rushers in the league in Yianni Maragos. Bennett Stusek has been a big contributor offense and special teams as well. Young defensive back, Drew Lawrence, is turning into a real ball hawk. Jaxon Ford and Josh White will also be all over the field on defense and special teams.

The run offense of the Tartans has been clicking, and the defense has been steadily improving. Hall explained, “Our run offense has been a strength, and our defense is improving each week as the players continue to develop their technical skills and system execution.”

Heading into this contest as the underdog, the Tartans have to play with the attitude that they have nothing to lose. “If the players believe in themselves, their teammates and their coaches, we should have our best game of the season,” said Hall.

Players to watch for on the Riffel Royals are: #CFC100 RB/DB Kyle Borsa, #CFC100 OL/DL Tanner Schmekel, RB/LB Lucas Nurkowski and LB/OL Riley Cooper.

The keys to this playoff game will be which team can establish, or stop the others run game. Both teams have two of the top running backs in the league and will need to establish their run game in order to have success Friday night. Derek Pilon from the Royals concluded, “Also the other key is the turnover battle, which team can force more turnovers!”

We at CFC think that the Campbell Tartans will get their revenge and play a complete game this time around. Kickoff is at 7:30 Friday.
