CFCs PRE-SEASON POLL

CFCs WEEK 1 POLL

1. (3) Laval Rouge et or – (2-0) +71
Laval has run away from both teams they have played to date late in second half. Laval travels to halifax this week to play the Huskies. If the defense continues their strong play they will go 3 and 0.

2. (4) Ottawa Gee Gees – (3-0) +52
Defense has been the key early on for the Gee Gees. Sinopoli has played well enough to win 3 games but has to be better in the red zone. A key match up versus Mac this weekend should go far in solidifying first or second place for the Gee Gees.

3. (5) Alberta Golden Bears (2-0) +33
The only undefeated team in Canada West will have a big test this weekend when they host the battered and bruised provincial rivals from Calgary.

4. (1) Saskatchewan Huskies (1-1) +2
Disappointing. The only way to characterize a lackluster effort in front of a homecoming crowd. That being said, all will be forgotten if the Huskies go on a run. They travel down the road to Regina to face the rams this weekend.

5. (2) Calgary Dinos (1-1) -18
Lost to Saskatchewan and then beat Regina without 5 all-canadians. This week it won’t get any easier as they travel up highway 2 to face the Bears from Alberta.

6. (5) Western Mustangs – (2-1) +75
Blew out Laurier then lost a close one on the road to Ottawa then blew out McMaster. Home field advantage is obviously important to the ‘stangs, who travel down the McDonald-Cartier highway to face south western ontario rival windsor lancers.

7. (9) Montreal Carabins (2-0) +45
Came away with a close win over Sherbrooke at home and then routed Concordia who were missing 5th year QB Rob MacKay. Rotrand Sene is the key to the Carabins offense and had a break out game against con u. This week they travel to Antigonish to face the ST FX X-men.

8. (15) UBC Thunderbirds (1-1) +11
UBCs head coach Shawn Olsen made everyone believers (at least for one week) when they stunned the Saskatchewan Huskies for their first victory against them in 10 years. They try to keep it going this weekend when they host the Bisons.

9. (11) Queens Gaels – (1-1) +26
The Gaels celebrated in style after raising their national championship banner. QB Justin Chapedelaine continued to impress in his second CIS start throwing for 189 yards, 1 TD & 1 INT, and running for another 74 yards and 1 touchdown. Rookie linebacker Sam Sabourin is making a case for OUA & CIS rookie of the year with another huge day with 3 tackles, 7 assists, 1 sack, and 2 tackles for a loss.

10. (7) Regina Rams – (1-1) +31
Were impressive in a blowout win over Manitoba and could not pull out a close game versus an under-maned Calgary squad. All will be forgotten if they can beat their provincial foes from Saskatoon this weekend.

11. (22) Acadia Axemen (1-0) +10
Other than UBC beating Saskatchewan, the Axemen’s victory over the favoured SMU Huskies is probably the biggest upset victory west of Saskatchewan. The Axemen try to keep things rolling when they travel to Lennoxville to face the Bishop’s Gaiters this weekend.

12. (8) McMaster Mauraders – (2-1) -24
Won two tight games at home versus Queen’s and Laurier and then were walloped by the Mustangs in London. A huge game this weekend for the Mauraders as they travel to the nations capital to face the Gee Gees.

13. (12) Wilfrid Laurier Hawks- (1-2) -18
As expected the hawks played the blues well on Saturday night and american QB Shane Kelly had success getting the ball to star receiver Shamawd Chambers. Laurier has the OUA bye this week.

14. (NC) Concordia Stingers (1-1) -18
Big win in Lennoxville, paced by a great defensive effort but the undermanned offense was not good enough versus the Carabins. The stingers hope thay McKay is healthy versus and equally undermanned McGill Redmen team.

15. (6) Saint Mary’s Huskies – (0-1) -10
The Huskies ran up against a brick wall on Saturday and were axed by Acadia. Will the huskies have enough time to get ready for laval? Offensive performance will be the key in that match.

16. (NC) Sherbrooke Vert et or (0-2) -34
The sherbrooke faithful will be getting restless if they cannot pull off the victory at home this friday versus mount allison.

17. (24) Mount Allison Mounties (1-0) +13
Mount Allison won their first game since 2008 by beating the young X-men from Antigonish. A tough road test versus Sherbrooke should show the Mounties where they are this early in the season.

18. (17) Bishops Gaiters (1-1) +4
Two close games, one overtime victory. Coach Blugh would welcome an easy victory but will have to contend with an Axemen team confident after an opening day victory.

19. (13) Manitoba Bisons (0-2) -59
8.5 points per game is not going to do it in any conference, especially Canada West. The Bisons have turned the ball over 9 times in 2 games and have yet to cause a turnover on defense.

20. (18) McGill Redmen (0-2) -48
Played well against laval for one half and went in to double overtime versus Bishop’s without Jonathan Collin at QB. Concordia visits percival molson stadium on friday.

21. (19) Guelph Gryphons (2-0) +26
Beat U of T and York so far. Big test this week at Queen’s will determine where the Gryphons are under new head coach stu lang.

22. (20) Windsor Lancers (1-2) -33
Just can’t seem to beat the top tier teams. Were handled by Queen’s 40 to 7. The good news is rookie QB Austin Kennedy had a competent first CIS start throwing for 138 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT, and running for another 35 yards.

23. (21) Saint Francis Xavier (0-1) -13
Lost to Mount Allison for the first time since a double OT loss in 2008. The young X-men squad will have to regroup quickly in order to stop the visiting running attack of the Montreal Carabins.

24. (23) Toronto Varsity Blues (0-3) -42
The Toronto ‘vanier cup’ is this weekend when the Lions travel down to Varsity stadium to take on the blues. It is homecoming Varsity grads.

25. (NC) York Lions (0-2) -66
The York ‘vanier cup’ is this weekend when the Lions travel down to Varsity stadium to take on the blues.

CFC “TOP 25” CIS poll is conducted by a group of ex-CIS players and coaches. The group is represented in each CIS province with a total of 14 individuals. The criteria takes into consideration strength of conference (based on margin of victory), strength of schedule (based on opponents records & performance) and most recent performance.

The list will be compiled quickly after the last game of the weekend.

A) First # is current ranking
B) # in bracket is previous weeks ranking. NC = no change
C) #s after name is won loss record
D) #s after win loss is + – / margin of win – loss
