CFCs ‘Top 25’ CIS poll – Week 5 – “And then there was 1”

1. (NC) Laval Rouge et or(5-0) +125
The Rouge et or play the Carabins in Montreal this weekend then host the gaiters the following weekend. Will be two great tests and an indication of just how good the rouge et or offense is versus two strong defenses. Who is the starting QB at the end of the season?

2. (4) Calgary Dinos (4-1) +9
Continue to win without a full lineup which may bode well for the dinos at the end of the year when other teams are equally banged up. Finish with Saskatchewan, Regina, and Alberta. And then probably 2 of those teams again during the playoffs (if they win). What a finish.

3. (5) Regina Rams(4-1) +109
Not much pre-season talk about the rams this season but they have made a statement by beating all canada west opponents save a close loss to the dinos in calgary. Last two out of three games of the season are against the dinos and huskies. Should be a great race for the top 3 spots in Canada West. Marc Mueller continues to impress.

4. (6) Western Mustangs (5-1) +133
After a hiccup in Ottawa the mustangs are looking like the team to beat in the OUA. Defense continues to lead the way with stand out performances by John Surla and Adrian Kaiser and Mike Van Praet and Craig Butler.

5. (6) Bishops Gaiters (4-1) +38
The Gaiters look to be for real after handing the carabins their first loss of the season.

6. (7) Saskatchewan Huskies (3-2) +76
Offense has looked great in their last 2 victories. Laurence Nixon has played like an all-canadian in both of those 2 games. Play Calgary after the bye week in a rematch of their week one victory over the dinos. Can’t wait.

7. (3) Montreal Carabins (4-1) +37
Looks like the one day delay turned out to be a bad thing for the carabins. Were never in the game versus the gaiters.

8. (2) Ottawa Gee Gees – (5-1) +57
Lost to Toronto. Must regroup in order to defeat Laurier this weekend at home. Defense gave up a lot of yards against toronto. Will they be able to contain the likes of Alex Anthony, Shamawd Chambers and Dillon Heap?

9. (12) McMaster Mauraders (4-2) 62
Blew out York. Host Guelph this friday in what should be an important game for securing a 2nd or 3rd place position for the mauraders.

10. (15) Wilfrid Laurier Hawks- (3-2) +72
Who are the Wilfrid Laurier Hawks? Answer may be more clear after a visit to Ottawa.

11. (8) Alberta Golden Bears (2-3) -32
Quickly fading in canada west. Have looked lifeless in past two defeats. The bye week may do them some good. Play UBC and Manitoba in next 2 games which should determine the last playoff spot in the west. The bears still control their own destiny.

12. (9) Concordia Stingers (2-3) -40
Four weeks in a row the stingers were without 5th year QB Rob MacKay and only a last minute victory versus mcgill to show for it. Good thing McGill is up this weekend.

13. (17) Sherbrooke Vert et or (2-3) 10
Simon Charbonneau-Campeau was awesome in the victory over McGill with 223 yards on 9 receptions for 1 touchdown. The battle of sherbrooke is this weekend when they take out cross town rivals Bishops in what should be a great game.

14. (10) Guelph Gryphons (3-2) +25
The offense has looked really bad in last 2 defeats averaging 263 yards in those two losses. They travel to McMaster and Ottawa for last 2 out of 3 games. The playoff race gets interesting.

15. (13) UBC Thunderbirds (1-4) -64
Three game losing streak. Good luck in the shrum bowl versus Simon Fraser.

16. (14) Manitoba Bisons (1-4) -98
Ouch.

17. (16) Queens Gaels(1-4) +20
The offense is starting to come unraveled. Play Laurier, York and Toronto in their last three games. Playoffs…playoffs.

18. (24) Toronto Varsity Blues (2-3) -32
Biggest upset of the year with a victory over the Ottawa Gee Gees. QB Andrew Gillis had a huge game throwing for 343 yards and rushing for 43. Freshman running back Aaron Milton is getting better by the game. Statement game when they visit Queens this weekend.

19. (21) Saint Mary’s Huskies (1-3) -15
Crushed Acadia at home. Was a breakout performance for Jahmeek Taylor. If the huskies can find a consistent offensive attack they could find themselves on top at the end.

20. (18) Mount Allison Mounties (2-2) -30
Different team without all-canadian Gary Ross. Ben Stehr & Adam Molnar stepped up in his absence but it still was not enough.

21. (19) Acadia Axemen (2-1) 8
Were crushed by the huskies friday night. Should be an interesting match up this weekend in sackville versus the mounties. The offense has to score some points versus the mounties.

22. (23) Saint Francis Xavier (1-3) -32
Beat Mount Allison during a spirited homecoming affair. Could be the jump start this young team needed. You only have to come second last to make the playoffs in the AUS. Like every team out east still hold their own destiny.

23. (20) McGill Redmen (0-5) -92
The tank is empty. Last 4 games are against Concordia, Montreal, Laval, and Sherbrooke. This week versus Concordia may be their last chance for a victory.

24. (22) Windsor Lancers (1-4) -84
Had the bye this week. Must beat York to re-establish some momentum.

25. (NC) York Lions (0-5) -183
Their last chance to win a game is this weekend versus windsor.
