CFL Gibson’s Finest CFL Players of the Week 12: Pierce, McKenzie, Prefontaine, Messam (video)

Canadian Football League Week #12

TORONTO – Buck Pierce, Chris McKenzie, Noel Prefontaine and Jerome Messam were named the Gibson’s Finest CFL Players of the Week for the twelfth week of the 2011 season.

The four players were chosen by a panel of judges including: former Canadian Football League players Matt Dunigan (@MattDuniganTSN) and Duane Forde (@DuaneFordeTSN), now of TSN, and Pierre Vercheval of RDS.


Gibson’s Finest CFL Offensive Player of the Week

Buck Pierce
QB – Winnipeg Blue Bombers

Winnipeg Blue Bombers quarterback Buck Pierce has been named Gibson’s Finest CFL Offensive Player of the Week for the second time this season. Pierce completed 20-of-29 pass attempts for 312 yards, including a 92-yarder to Cory Watson, and a pair of touchdowns. Pierce’s first touchdown came in the first quarter on a nine-yard pass to Greg Carr (@Carr_Show ). This was Carr’s first touchdown of the season. His second touchdown came in the third quarter on a 39-yard pass to Terrence Edwards. Pierce also registered three carries for 24 yards in the Bombers’ 25-23 win over the Montreal Alouettes on Sunday afternoon.


Gibson’s Finest CFL Defensive Player of the Week

Chris McKenzie
DB – Saskatchewan Roughriders

Saskatchewan Roughriders defensive back Chris McKenzie has been named Gibson’s Finest CFL Defensive Player of the Week. In the fourth quarter of Saturday afternoon’s match up, McKenzie solidified the Riders’ victory over the Toronto Argonauts, intercepting a Steven Jyles pass and returning 33-yards for a touchdown. McKenzie also registered three tackles and a quarterback sack in the Riders’ 30-20 win.


Gibson’s Finest CFL Special Teams Player of the Week

Noel Prefontaine
P/K – Toronto Argonauts

Toronto Argonauts 20 @ Saskatchewan Roughriders 30

For the second time this season, Toronto Argonauts punter/kicker Noel Prefontaine has been named Gibson’s Finest CFL Special Teams Player of the Week. Prefontaine connected on all four field goal attempts, coming from 18, 41, 35 and 32 yards, and one convert in the Argos’ 30-20 loss to the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

Prefontaine also registered seven punts for 290 yards, with an average of 41.4 yards. His longest punt was 60 yards.

Early in the first quarter, Prefontaine capitalized on a successful trick play, faking a punt and connecting with Jeremy Unertl on a 39-yard pass.


Gibson’s Finest CFL Canadian Player of the Week

Jerome Messam
RB – Edmonton Eskimos

Edmonton Eskimos 38 @ Hamilton Tiger-Cats 23

Edmonton Eskimos running back Jerome Messam has been named Gibson’s Finest CFL Canadian Player of the Week. Messam had the best showing of his CFL career in the Esks’ 38-23 win over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, registering 15 carries for 139 yards, including a 43-yarder, and two touchdowns. His first touchdown came in the first quarter on a 26-yard run and his second came in the fourth quarter on a 6-yard carry. It is the third time this season that the Toronto native has captured this award.
