CFL mourns death of player in shooting

STATEMENT ON THE DEATH OF MYLAN HICKS

Sunday, September 25, 2016 — The Canadian Football League and the Canadian Football League Players’ Association have released the following statement on the death of Calgary Stampeders’ Mylan Hicks:

“The Calgary Stampeders informed us this morning of the sad news regarding the death of Mylan Hicks. On behalf of our Board of Governors and the entire CFL community across Canada, I’d like to convey my deepest sympathies to Mylan’s family and friends. Our thoughts and prayers are also with the Stampeders organization as they mourn this tragic loss.”

The Calgary Stampeders are devastated by the news of the death of team member Mylan Hicks.

Mylan’s life was taken in act of violence early on Sunday morning who was shot and killed early Sunday morning after an incident at a Calgary nightclub. Police said they have a suspect in custody.

“Obviously this is an extremely difficult and upsetting time for the players and staff,” said Stampeders president and general manager John Hufnagel. “It’s a terrible tragedy. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Mylan’s family.”

“The loss of this 23-year-old young man at this stage of his life and his career is an unfathomable tragedy,” said Ken King, president and CEO of the Calgary Sports and Entertainment Corporation. “Our sympathies to Mylan’s family and to the Stampeders family of players, coaches and staff.”

John Hufnagel will be available in the players’ lounge at noon today. Members of the media are asked to enter through the clubhouse doors at the south end of the stadium.
