CFL Players of the Week (2): Ray, Bowman, Washington & Durie

TORONTO – Ricky Ray, John Bowman, Demond Washington and Andre Durie were named the Canadian Football League Players of the Week for Week 2 of the 2014 Canadian Football League season.


The three players were chosen by a panel of judges including: former Canadian Football League players Matt Dunigan and Duane Forde of TSN, and Pierre Vercheval of RDS.

CFL Offensive Player of the Week

Ricky Ray
QB – Toronto Argonauts

Saskatchewan Roughriders 15 @ Toronto Argonauts 48

Toronto Argonauts quarterback Ricky Ray was named the Offensive Player of the Week for Week 2. Ray passed for 407 yards, on 29-of-37 passing with three touchdown passes and zero interceptions in Toronto’s home opening win over the reigning Grey Cup champions, Saskatchewan Roughriders, 48-15.

In the game, Ray threw touchdown passes to Jason Barnes (14 yards), Chad Owens (14 yards) and Mike Bradwell (5 yards).

Ray, a Happy Camp, California native and former standout at Sacramento State, also rushed for 34 yards on four carries, which is the most he has rushed for in a game since week 14 in 2011.

This is Ray’s first player of the week award this season. Last season, he was the recipient of the weekly award three times.

CFL Defensive Player of the Week

John Bowman
DE – Montreal Alouettes

BC Lions 9 @ Montreal Alouettes 24

Montreal Alouettes defensive end John Bowman was named the Defensive Player of the Week for Week 2. Bowman recorded five tackles including matching his career-high with four sacks in a winning effort over the BC Lions, 24-9.

The second all-time sacks leader at Wingate University and native of Brooklyn, New York currently leads the CFL in sacks following his Week 2 performance and is second on the Alouettes with 10 tackles.

CFL Special Teams Player of the Week

Demond Washington
KR – Winnipeg Blue Bombers

Ottawa REDBLACKS 28 @ Winnipeg Blue Bombers 36

Winnipeg Blue Bombers kick returner Demond Washington was named the Special Teams Player of the Week for Week 2. Washington returned a Brett Maher kickoff 96 yards for a touchdown to help Winnipeg pull off the comeback victory against the Ottawa REDBLACKS, 36-28 in Winnipeg.

Washington, a native of Tallassee, Alabama and the single-season kick return yards leader at Auburn, has returned two kickoffs this season for 120 yards and one touchdown.

This is Washington’s second career Special Teams Player of the Week.

CFL Canadian Player of the Week

Andre Durie
SB – Toronto Argonauts

Saskatchewan Roughriders 15 @ Toronto Argonauts 48

Toronto Argonauts slotback Andre Durie was named the Canadian Player of the Week for Week 2. Durie was the recipient of five of Ricky Ray’s passes, which he converted for 77 yards in the Argonauts home opening win over the Roughriders, 48-18.

Durie the dual threat player from Mississauga, Ontario and York University product also rushed the football twice for 18 yards.

Last season Durie was awarded the Canadian Player of the Week two times.
