CFL POW (19): Carter, Sherritt, Banks & Capicciotti

TORONTO – Duron Carter, J.C. Sherritt, Brandon Banks and Justin Capicciotti were named the Canadian Football League Players of the Week for Week 19 of the 2014 Canadian Football League season.

The four players were chosen by a panel of judges including: former Canadian Football League players Matt Dunigan and Duane Forde of TSN, and Pierre Vercheval of RDS.

Duron Carter

WR – Montreal Alouettes

Montreal Alouettes wide receiver Duron Carter was named the Offensive Player of the Week for Week 19. Carter caught eleven passes for 181 yards and scored a touchdown in the Alouettes’ 17-14 playoff-clinching victory over the Argonauts in Montreal.

The native of Fort Lauderdale, Florida’s big week saw him eastablish ne w career-highs in both receptions and receiving yards in a single contest. With ten minutes left in the game, Carter scored the game-winning touchdown from 23 yards out to propel the Als into the post-season.

In his second year with the Alouettes, Carter leads the team in receptions with 71. He has a team-leading six receiving touchdowns on the year and is currently 13 yards shy of reaching his first career 1,000-yard season in the CFL.


This is Carter’s first Player of the Week award. 

CFL Defensive Player of the Week

J.C. Sherritt

LB – Edmonton Eskimos

Edmonton Eskimos linebacker J.C. Sherritt was named the Defensive Player of the Week for Week 19. Sherritt recorded seven tackles, a career-high three sacks, a special teams tackle and a forced fumble as the Eskimos registered a convincing 37-3 home win over the BC Lions.

The 2012 Most Outstanding Defensive Player of the Year sacked pivot Kevin Glenn on three occasions to send the Lions back a total of 23 yards. The win gave Edmonton second-place in the West Division and guaranteed that the Eskimos faithful at Commonwealth Stadium would see their team play again this season.

In an injury plagued year, the four-year CFL veteran seems to be rounding into form. The all-time tackles leader at Eastern Washington has recorded 31 tackles, three sacks and five special teams tackles this year.

This is Sherritt’s first Player of the Week honour this season and the fifth of his career; his last came in Week 19 during the 2012 season.

Brandon Banks

Hamilton Tiger-Cats 34 @ Ottawa REDBLACKS 25


Hamilton Tiger-Cats returner Brandon Banks was named the Special Teams Player of the Week for Week 19. Banks compiled 118 combined-return yards and notched the first kickoff return touchdown of his career as Hamilton won 34-25 in the nation’s capital.

Midway through the second quarter, the REDBLACKS scored a touchdown to pull ahead 15-7. Banks responded by returning the ensuing kickoff 103 yards for a major to halt the home team’s momentum.

Banks – Kansas State University’s single season record holder for most kickoff return yards – leads the CFL in punt-return yards with 533. The native of Garner, North Carolina sits second in the league with 1,236 combined return yards.

This is the second time in Banks’ career that he has been named Special Teams Player of the Week after receiving the honour earlier this season in Week 7.

Justin Capicciotti

Hamilton Tiger-Cats 34 @ Ottawa REDBLACKS 25

Ottawa REDBLACKS defensive lineman Justin Capicciotti was named the Canadian Player of the Week for Week 19. In the team’s final home game of the year, Capicciotti tallied four tackles and a pair of sacks in the REDBLACKS’ loss to the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

For the second time in his three seasons, Capicciotti notched two sacks in a single game. The product of Simon Fraser University brought down Zach Collaros in the second and again in the third for a total of 20 lost yards.

Capicciotti, a second-round pick in the 2012 CFL Draft, is having a breakout campaign. His new career-high of ten sacks leads Ottawa and his 45 tackles on the year is a new personal-best.

This is the Toronto, Ontario native’s second career CFL Player of the Week honour with his first coming in Week 15 this season.
