CFL POW (6): Willy, Yell, McDuffie & Harris

TORONTOΒ – Drew Willy, Ronnie Yell, Quincy McDuffie and Andrew Harris were named the Canadian Football League Players of the Week for Week 6 of the 2014 Canadian Football League season.


The four players were chosen by a panel of judges including: former Canadian Football League players Matt Dunigan and Duane Forde of TSN, and Pierre Vercheval of RDS.

CFL Offensive Player of the Week

Drew Willy
QB – Winnipeg Blue Bombers

Winnipeg Blue Bombers 27 @ Hamilton Tiger-Cats 26

Winnipeg Blue Bombers quarterback Drew Willy was named the Offensive Player of the Week for Week 6. Against the Tiger-Cats, Willy marched the Blue Bombers 94 yards down the field and found Nic Grigsby in the end zone with no time remaining on the clock to tie the game. Lirim Hajrullahu then kicked the game-winning convert to give the Blue Bombers a 27-26 win on the road.

Willy completed 31-of-43 (72.1%) passes for a career-high 361 yards and tossed his lone touchdown on the second last play of the game. He also added 16 yards on a pair of rushes against the Tiger-Cats.

A native of Randolph, NJ and the all-time leader in career yards and touchdowns at the University of Buffalo, Willy has 1,662 passing yards this season – good enough for second in the CFL.

This is Willy’s second Player of the Week award in his career and his second this season with his first coming in Week 1.

CFL Defensive Player of the Week

Ronnie Yell
DB – BC Lions

BC Lions 25 @ Calgary Stampeders 24

BC Lions defensive back Ronnie Yell was named the Defensive Player of the Week for Week 6. Yell recorded his first career interception offΒ  Bo Levi Mitchell and returned it 34-yards for a touchdown midway through the first quarter to help the Lions defeat the Stampeders 25-24.

The native of Los Angeles, California and product of San Jose State also forced a fumble and notched a pair of special teams tackles in the game. His forced fumble late in the fourth quarter halted Calgary’s attempt to make a last minute comeback.

In his rookie season, Yell has recorded 14 tackles, five special teams tackles, an interception and a pair of forced fumbles.

This is Yell’s first career Player of the Week award.

CFL Special Teams Player of the Week

Quincy McDuffie
KR/PR – Hamilton Tiger-Cats

Winnipeg Blue Bombers 27 @ Hamilton Tiger-Cats 26

Hamilton Tiger-Cats kick and punt returner Quincy McDuffie was named the Special Teams Player of the Week for Week 6. In his first CFL game, McDuffie returned a Lirim Hajrullahu punt 67 yards for a touchdown in the Ticats 27-26 loss to the Blue Bombers.

In the game, McDuffie returned five punts for 105 yards (21.0 yards per punt return) and also returned three kickoffs for 47 yards (15.7 yards per return).

The 5’10” 178 pound returner is a native of Orlando, Florida and holds the record for most kickoff return yards at the University of Central Florida.

This is McDuffie’s first Player of the Week award.


CFL Canadian Player of the Week

Andrew Harris
RB – BC Lions

BC Lions 25 @ Calgary Stampeders 24

BC Lions running back Andrew Harris was named the Canadian Player of the Week for Week 6. Harris recorded 143 yards from scrimmage and scored a key fourth quarter touchdown to help guide the Lions to an impressive 25-24 comeback win over the Calgary Stampeders at McMahon Stadium.

Harris, a Winnipeg, Manitoba native rushed for 70 yards on 15 carries (4.7 yards per carry) and added five receptions for 73 yards, including a 4-yard touchdown reception against the Stampeders.

Harris currently leads the league in rushing with 381 yards, is second in receiving with 341 yards and is first in the league with 722 yards from scrimmage.

The 5’11” 213 pound running back has also scored four touchdowns this season for the BC Lions.

This is Harris’ third Canadian Player of the Week award this season and the ninth of his career. Harris was also named Canadian Player of the Month for July.
