CFL Offensive Player of the Week

Kevin Glenn
QB – BC Lions

Hamilton Tiger-Cats 29 @ BC Lions 36

BC Lions quarterback Kevin Glenn was named the Offensive Player of the Week for Week 7. Glenn completed 22-of-36 (61.1%) passes for 407 yards. He threw one touchdown and rushed for another in the Lions’ 36-29 home win over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

Midway through the first quarter, Glenn found Emmanuel Arceneaux on a 10-yard pass to give the Lions an early 10-0 advantage.

Glenn ran twice in the game for 36 yards, including a 19-yard touchdown run late in the first quarter to give the Lions a 17-3 lead.

Glenn, a product of Illinois State, is currently second in the league with 1,797 passing yards and has eight passing touchdowns this season.

It was the seventh time in the Detroit, Michigan native’s career that he has passed for over 400 yards.

This is Glenn’s first Player of the Week award this season and his first since Week 17 in 2010.

CFL Defensive Player of the Week

John Chick
DE – Saskatchewan Roughriders

Saskatchewan Roughriders 23 @ Winnipeg Blue Bombers 17

Saskatchewan Roughriders defensive end John Chick was named the Defensive Player of the Week for Week 7. Chick recorded a career-high three sacks en route to the Roughriders’ 23-17 road victory over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

The 6’4″ 250 pound defensive end totaled five tackles in the game.

The native of Gillette, Wyoming and product of Utah State is currently first in the league in sacks with nine and has 18 tackles in six games this season. If Chick continues at his current pace, he will eclipse the CFL single season sack record of 26.5, established by James Parker in 1984.

This is Chick’s second Player of the Week award this season; he was also named Defensive Player of the Month for July.

CFL Special Teams Player of the Week

Brandon Banks
KR/PR – Hamilton Tiger-Cats

Hamilton Tiger-Cats 29 @ BC Lions 36

Hamilton Tiger-Cats kick and punt returner Brandon Banks was named the Special Teams Player of the Week for Week 7. In Banks’ matchup against the BC Lions, he returned a Ricky Schmitt punt 97 yards for a touchdown in the Ticats’ 36-29 loss.

Banks returned five punts for 116 yards (averaging 23.2 yards) and four kickoffs for 86 yards (averaging 21.5 yards).

The 5’7″ 153 pound returner is a native of Garner, North Carolina and holds the Kansas State University single season record for most kickoff return yards.

This makes it back-to-back weeks in which a Hamilton Tiger-Cat has taken home Special Teams Player of the Week honours after fellow returner Quincy McDuffie won the award in Week 6.

This is the second time in Banks’ career that he has been named Special Teams Player of the Week.

CFL Canadian Player of the Week

Jerome Messam
RB – Saskatchewan Roughriders

Saskatchewan Roughriders 23 @ Winnipeg Blue Bombers 17

Saskatchewan Roughriders running back Jerome Messam was named the Canadian Player of the Week for Week 7. Messam took over running back duties in the second quarter and rushed for 126 yards on 19 carries as the Riders won 23-17 on the road against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

Messam, a Toronto, Ontario native, was heavily relied upon late in the fourth to run the clock for the Roughriders. In the final frame, Messam accumulated 73 yards on 12 carries.

His 126 rushing yards was the most he has recorded in a game since 2011, when he ran for 139 against Hamilton.

This is Messam’s first Canadian Player of the Week award this season and the seventh of his career, with his last coming in Week 17 of the 2011 season.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
